<< RSI: Umm, what do you need hard facts for, to know that second hand smoke is bad for you? >>

Isn?t that the same argument that the Catholic Church used to try to have Galileo and Bruno killed for advocating the astronomical theories of Copernicus?
If you base common sense on what appears to be obvious; we should still think that the Earth is flat and that the sun and everything else revolves around the earth.

Besides it does not matter to people like you what that hard science says anyways. You are as dogmatic in your beliefs as those that made Galileo recant before the 1633 Inquisition in Rome.

So do you guys believe that second hand smoke is harmless? Just curious what your opinion is.

I believe that second hand smoke is about as harmful as the exhaust fume coming out of your car, the smoking coming from a factory, the asbestos that has been covered up in buildings, the nitrates (sp?) in the bacon we eat, the sachrine in many diet or lo-cal products, the saturated fat in all the food we like, etc, etc, etc,! So you wipe out cigarette smoking in a crusade.......what's next? stopping the production of all gas powered autos? Shutting down a steel mill, an oil refinery, a plastics manufacturing plant?

My secondhand smoke is as dangerous as any of the above mentioned things, if even that!

People die of lung cancer, enphysema, and heat disease every day. Many have never smoked nor have lived with someone to contract it from secondhand smoke.

It may be. If this sounds like an outlandish statement, just remember back 6 years ago. Back then it was universally considered harmless. Compare ETS studies to some others that indicate a higher association.
In fact, all sorts of wacky associations can be identified through statistics, as shown by the following chart. Tap water and miscarriages, for instance, or whole milk and lung cancer.

SAMPLE STATISTICAL ASSOCIATIONS
Exposure and disease Reported relative risk (by size)

Environmental tobacco smoke and lung cancer 1.19
Consuming olive oil and breast cancer 1.25
Vasectomy and prostate cancer 1.3
Obesity in women and premature death 1.3
Sedentary job and colon cancer 1.3
3 cups of coffee per week and premature death 1.3
Birth weight of 8+ pounds and breast cancer 1.3
Baldness in men under 55 and heart attack 1.4
Eating margarine everyday and heart disease 1.5
Drinking tap water and miscarriage 1.5
Regular use of mouthwash and mouth cancer 1.5
Abortion and breast cancer 1.5
Eating yogurt and ovarian cancer 2.0
Drinking whole milk and lung cancer 2.14
Obesity in nonsmoking women and premature death 2.2
Eating red meat and advanced prostate cancer 2.6
Chlorinated drinking water and bladder cancer 4.0
Douching and cervical cancer 4.0
Workplace stress and colorectal cancer 5.5
Eating 12+ hot dogs per month and leukemia 9.5
Wearing a brassiere all day and breast cancer 12,500

So for your purposes, you shouldn't really care whether an association is fact or fiction, only that you've found it. But there is this thing called biological plausibility that you will need to remember.

I'll second that, the world is a dangerious place. If a little thing like second hand smoke is a serious threat to your health, you have a whole LOT of problems ahead...

Mount St. Helens put more pollution into the air than all the cigarette smokers in history. Has anyone ever heard of Krakatoa? When it erupted it dimmed the sunlight on Earth for months. What is it that you think caused the sunlight to be filtered out? It was particulates that the human race breathed for years and the human race is still here. Every time you fart you are putting methane into the atmosphere. ...never mind. Hypocrites will forever point their fingers at others.

And people that like Sprite SUCK.

As a matter of fact let?s expose you to some anti-sprite types.
You?re White Trash!
I hope you DIE!
With those Sprite cans I see all over the roadside, you are obviously selfish about the environment and only care about yourself.
I once heard about some Sprite drinker that started a forest fire.
My mother drank a six-pack a day of Sprite and that gave me Asthma!
The soda manufactures have been lying to you for decades. They spike your soda with extra caffeine to make you want more.
People like you are setting a bad example for the children! Why can?t you drink Sprite in your own house?
You stupid tool of the soda industry! I hope you die soon!!!!!

I don't know about you, but I'm all for freedom

<<If they want to kill themselves by smoking, drinking, doing drugs..
fine! As long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. Ban, ban, ban.. WTF!>>

HAhahah, surely you jest? If smoking, drinking, and drugs don't hurt other people, then all those kids killed by drunk drivers must be fiction, the babies born addicted to heroin must have done something to deserve it, those people with stomas must have never liked talking very much, and babies of smokers have a high risk of genetic defects for no apparent reason. (I'm being sarcastic too)

I agree that smoking sucks, but we can't get too mad with smokers. Rather they are people you should pity. Smoking is a disease that starts with low self-esteem and ends up eating it's victims alive.

They can't quit even when they want too, feel a need to justify their addiction to others, and deny how it's hurting themselves and others because it's basic human nature to deny your own incompetence.

Smokers are human just like everyone else, they're just sick. Smokers don't need punishment...they need help.

Personally, I think you guys are in denial. Hello...McFly....anybody in there? It's smoke! How can breathing smoke be harmless? Oh well, I guess you got your opinion and I got mine. I just don't understand why you guys won't admit that smoking is dirty, filthy, smelly, and bad for you...but your addicted. I can't think of a reason why anyone would smoke other than because they're addicted. Surely, none of you say "I'm glad I smoke." Right?

Ahh, the good old "look down on the poor SOB's" approach. Ever drink a beer? Same d*** thing. There's something akin to smokeing in everyone's life, THAT's human nature.

For the millionth time. I'm glad I smoke. I like to smoke. I LOVE to smoke. I quit drinking, I no longer play with drugs(never did much really), heck I dont even drive fast anymore. But I smoke, and I love every single one I light up. And I will continue to smoke untill they cast my ashes somewhere, preferably in an ashtray of a nice car.

It's funny, people dont get high on nicotine and beat there wives and children, but that's "OK" somehow..

The more easy life gets in this country the dumber we get as a whole.

Your opinion is that smoking is dirty, filthy, smelly and bad for someone, and my opinion is that Soujiro is an absolute freakin nut case that sure will look funny after I shove this carton of cigarttes of his or her a$$.

I'll answer the question again and say I don't know, but I wish people littered less.

Then I'll ask another question? Does anyone else think that filters on cigarettes are a little hilarious. Why not just make the cigarettes less potent in the first place. Seems like a marketing scheme to me. Some guy in the cigarette industry laughing all the way to the bank. "Hey what if we put filters on these things. I'll bet people will believe the crap about how it better for you and we can charge more per pack..." Boy, I love marketiing people. It's all about spin...

I find it funny that the smokers in this thread seem to think they will outlive me because they smoke. Talk about assbackwards logic.

I smoke but I will outlive you because I don't generalize about people just because I don't agree with them. Nice run on sentence I just made. Anyways, um... that is all I had to say.

Please don't generalize.

I figure I'll outlive most people because of the way I have lived and consistantly survived and walked away from things without a scratch. People get sick and broken and screwed SO easily these days, I've been in accidents more than I can count, been hit by cars, shot at, attacked by large animals, small animals, rabid females, tax men, bill collectors, idiot MD's, not to mention the constant assualt of superstrong germs that are juiced up because all the rest of you run for an antibiotic at the first sign of sickness. I'm still standing, I still practically never get sick, I'm famous for my immunity, I crawl out and have been cut out of cars on ocasion and I stand there and watch the other passenger's taken away on stretchers. Yeah, I think it's a reasonably educated guess that I'll outlive most of you.

Not that that's a good thing either, I'm not really bragging about it, just makeing a point.

This said it all for me:

Let me know if you need help. I quit smoking a few months ago, but I'll be happy to pitch in and stick a carton up any bitchy, militant nonsmoker's ass. They're pathetic.
