Why Do Rock Stations Play Eminem?

A radio station in Detroit called 89X always plays his songs. I figured they were flexible on that because he's a local. But I've noticed that most other rock stations elsewhere also play his stuff.

Even Billboard classifies him as "rock". I can understand them playing rock/rap acts like Linkin Park and Kid Rock, but Eminem never claimed to be a rocker-rapper. There's no guitars in his music.

his song from 8 mile is i guess in the "rock" category. they play it here on a rock channel as well. perhaps its a conspiracy by clearchannel radio.

Actually 89X is based out of Windsor, Ontario. I still wonder why they play Eminem considering they are "The New Rock Alternative." My only explanation for it is that they are Canadian.

I'm pretty sure all their DJ's are American, and their studios are in Detroit. None of them speak with funny Canadian accents. I think they just broadcast from Canada because it's cheaper or whatever. I'm in Toledo, OH. The reception I get from the local rock station is better, but I like 89X because they play more of the up-and-coming, lesser known stuff.

They'll play whatever they think their audience wants to hear. The radio station would play Ozzy Osbourne sings Wagner's Ring Cycle for 9 days straight if they thought you would listen. Radio stations don't care what they play, in an artistic or any other sense. Their sole reason for being is to get as many listeners as possible so that they can charge the most confiscatory advertising rates possible.

That is why I don't listen to the radio - nothing good is played much any more on any stations that I can get locally. :(

yeah, what's up with that. they use to make fun of rappers. Funny that they hardly ever played black rappers in the entire history of the station. i guess since Eminem is white, that makes him alternative? :disgust:

Maybe because he's one of the very few rappers that don't sing jack isht about how much bling bling they have... honestly... i'm getting sick of all these rappers glorifying themselved in their songs.

Top selling artist of 2002. You play him.

The top selling artists in past years have been country singers, dance stars, etc. They don't play that stuff.

If you don't stick to the format, it irritates your listeners. Even if some listeners do like Eminem, people don't tune into rock stations to hear his music.

Bigger question:

Why does ANY station play Missy Misdemeanor Elliot.

And no, no one wants to see your 'cha-cha.'

Regarding eminem, i thought the same thing. I've heard it way too many times on 94.5 the Buzz (ClearChannel), and its the ONLY rap song i've heard on here. It sounds absolutely nothing like rock or alt. music.

Plain and simple: he's white.

They play him in NY also. 92.3 Krock (Viacom/infiniti) Howards broadcast station SUCKS balls.

I like the NJ 95.9 RAT and 89.5 WSOU Seaton Hall Pirate Radio
