Why do review sites only really seem to focus on FPS games?

Over the last couple of years I have become increasingly annoyed with a lot of hardware review sites. It seems like they all only really focus on FPS games - what is the reason for this? Is it because FPS games could be popular than other genres (just a guess)?

I'm sure I speak for quite a few other gamers out there, but everytime a new video card review comes out I'm always seeing benchmarks for Doom 3, Battlefield, HL2, Counterstrike, Call of Duty etc. I myself hardly play any FPS games, and play a lot of driving games, simulation games (like MS flight sim) and also the GTA series.

I'm certainly not suggesting that review sites should rid themselves of testing FPS games, but it really would be nice if they included a lot more games from other genres. So far the only hardware site that seems to do this is Xbitlabs.

Does anyone agree with me on this, of am I just getting a bit old or something?

Because generally FPS games require more FPS. Games like RPGS and Rts games only require a certain fps (24-30) because you don't need pinpoint accuracy in order to get something like a headshot.

The only other genre which is usually demanding is flight sims, and they only tend to tax the CP.
With FPS you get a mix, some games, like FEAR, are heavily taxing on graphics cards, others, like UT2004 and HL2, are heavy on the CPU, and some, like BF2 are heavy generally (liking lots of RAM etc).
FPS are used because they tend to offer the most in terms of pushing a system to its limits in a variety of ways, and hence are best for showing off the power of the components, or lack of power.

Yeah, because usually FPS center the most on detail and power, especially since you zoom in closer too. The only time I've seen a third person game that was as intensive as a FPS was one that was a HL2 mod.

Probably b/c they're easier to bench, as most include a timedemo function. That's my guess, anyway.

Not all review sites review only FPS. ardOCP looks at the Sims2, Everquest2, and Need for Speed, none of which are First Person Shooters.

30fps for me on a FPS is fine...

Its fine, but you want 30fps at the very least, because during firefights fps drop dramatically, and thats when it counts. And with a good few vid card reviews, their goals was to shoot for 30 minimum.

While its the same for 3rd person action games, its not as intensive.
