Why do radio stations hate music so much?

I was driving home and my favourite song started playing on the radio, except something was wrong with it. The words were all wrong, some words were straight up missing, and parts were silenced out. It sounded horrible. They took a perfectly good song and totally ruined it. Why even bother playing it on the radio if they're going to destroy the artist's work?

Because it makes money? If you don't like it complain to them or stop listening to that station. Ranting on the internet isn't going to change it.

because of teh "rules". everything that is to be mass consumed MUST be sanitized, so it doesn't offend any one...

Lol. Actually, Cee-Lo's probably making twice as much money. You know how many teeny-bopper girls and soccer moms love that "Forget You" song? You think they'd be merrily singing along in their Grand Caravan to a song whose chorus is "Fuck You?" He now has probably 10x the audience he would have had with the uncensored version.

I hardly ever have the radio on. Granted, I hardly ever drive, but even when I do I don't bother. There are a handful of stations around here that theoretically play music I like; but the reality is that they play 20 minutes of (incredibly obnoxious car dealer) ads for every 40 minutes of music. And even then it's always the same old (sanitized) ACDC, Aerosmith, etc. Maybe Pandora has spoiled me, or maybe local radio just sucks ass.

My problem with radio is that it seems like every time I'm driving there's nothing but commercials or some shitheads talking on every station. I think I once drove 15 minutes without hearing a damn song.

I never listen to the radio. What annoys me especially is if they talk through a song. That was once meant so people couldn't record it and would still have a reason to buy the song (pressure from the record companies that wanted to sell lots of singles), but since they most of the time don't have great quality and often also shorten songs while people who don't want to pay for it can download songs at top quality that's pretty much an outdated idea. Which means that they could just as well just play the full song without talking through it or 'singing along', and thus try to get more people interested in the music.

This. And they seem to time their commercials so it's ads on every station at the same time.

Morning radio is the worst - shut the fuck up and play some music.

Some how satellite radio is still worse. It cuts out every 5 seconds where I live making listening to the radio like listening to a skipping cd.

radio censorship is not new. I am more pissed at the lack of variety.

i'd much rather not have censorship concealed by the use of mutes, alternative lyrics, whatever. just beep it and let the ugliness reflect the censorship itself.

since the superbowl peek-a-boob, censorship has run rampant. i think at very least historic songs that have been played millions of times uncensored ("who are you?", "mama kin") should be exempt, like nude statues.

Dear god, this.

They've got radios going here and there in the shop at work.

It's been more than 2 years I've worked there, and I don't think the playlists have changed much at all - and they were quite limited to begin with.

I listen to commercial-free music on my satellite radio.
$20/6month is well worth it

Don't blame the radio station for following the rules the gov imposes. It's not their fault. If you want to hear uncensored stuff listen to your own music or get satellite.

One radio station in the area censors it to just "F you", the other does "forget you". Since it has to be done, I prefer the former.
