Most cities have ordinances that sidewalks have to be cleared within a certain time after it snows.

The postman needs to get through. A few inches of snow is fine, but with the snow we got recently, you've got a clear it off if you want your mail.

Just pour yellow food coloring all over the area, they will avoid it and fall at the next house.

Why do I read your posts when they never contain anything of value/substance/intelligence?

When I was in Ohio I did it for my grandma because since she's old, you never know when an emergency might happen. I always kept the sidewalk clear as well as behind the car so that if we had to get out, we could. I also kept the snow off the car as best as I could.

it only melts if you live far enough south

up north, it snows and more snow falls before it melts. if you don't clean up the snow, you'll get stuck under it

Yeah... when I lived in the city, I kept the sidewalks in front of my parents place clean because of the law. <sigh> We had elderly neighbors on one side of us, so I took care of their driveway / sidewalks... and the lady across the street that wasn't able to do it herself...
