Why do places take debit cards but not CC?

I have never found a good answer to this. Is it because of some fees that CC company's charge?

Yep, CC companies usually charge 3-4% (could be wrong) to the merchant but AFAIK debit cards do not charge that.

My CostCo only accepts debit cards or Amex, I use my CostCo Amex card since it's a CC, doubles as my CostCo membership card, no annual fee and I get up to 2% back on my purchases.

Yup, your right. Its the fees. I don't remember the exact percentage of the fees they get but they are high. American Express is the worst.

yes and sometimes depends on the item being purchased. like for example you can't use a CC at the post office to buy a money order.

Thanks for confirming that guys. I was at Mcd's and when the girl at the counter snapped my debit card in half basically. Granted it already had a crack in it, but I told her to please be careful with it. So with no debit card I asked if they took CC and got the no I am sorry we don't. Had to go to an ATM and get some cash.

The credit card companies charges around $.25 to $.50 and 3-5% per transaction, that pretty much most if not more than the profit they make form a $3-5 meal.
Credit card is borrow money, and so there is always transaction cost involved. It might not be as high as the credit card companies are charging, but it exist.

And now you know why service workers make dirty faces at you when you want to charge something under 10 bucks.

I work at Shoprite and I frown at debit cards for under $10 because that usually means 1. it takes forever and 2. there's some cashback they're going to want and it's going to clean out my register, making it impossible to give cash change.

However, I laugh at CCs under $10 because it's ridiculous to think a person doesn't have $10 in their wallet.

I never carry cash, nor do I carry a wallet... just my ID, debit and credit cards in my pocket along with my keys and cell phone...

I laugh at you register boy.

Actually, a shop with a real storefront (i.e. not web-based) only has service rates about 2-3 % these days, plus a quarter for each transaction. If the shop doesn't accept CC, you can be sure the owner is clueless with successful business practices.

Try working in a hardware store. People charge things under a dollar all the time.
