What's the purpose of the open hand wave? Is it to visually display to the other person that they are not armed?

Trying pointing and laughing instead. I heard that gives a great first impression.

Because moving objects are more noticeable at a distance than still ones. The open hand is probably as you guessed, to show you aren't about to plant a shuriken in their forehead.

You could wave you middle finger instead.
Yes, but do you know where showing the middle-finger came from?

not sure, is it related to the peace sign?

fyi the peace sign is from the 100 years war. when english longbow dudes were captured by the french, they would have their index and middle fingers cut off, so that they could no longer draw back the string on their bows. so, in battle, the english would wave their two fingers at the french, showing that they still had them/french were unable to capture them.
