Why do people use vi and emacs?

Why do people use vi and emacs? They just seem outdated/complicated...why not use a gui editor?

vi is anything but outdated. Too many features to give it up.

What gui editor would you use over a 9600 serial cable?

Both checks and powerful editors like vi and emacs can come in quite useful.

because not every system has gui? beside gvim and xemacs are gui version of vi and emacs ,
