Why do people use hankerchiefs....

Well, if the mucous is clear, then the hankerchief works pretty well. This reminds me of the times when I'm taking a test and have only 1 tissue to wipe my runny nose with. Sometimes, the tissue gets too soaked and I have to wipe my nose with my hand and wipe the mucous on my pants. Good thing everyone is busy taking a test.

But, if the mucous is all brown and whatever funky colored, using a hankerchief would be gross.

I don't think handkerchiefs are intended for blowing one's nose. They are rather used to wipe off one's hands, and/or chairs like that brat Niles on that show Fraiser does.
