Why do people turn into morons when an emergency vehicle tries to get past them?

I notice that, though we were all taught to pull over and stop when you hear a siren, most people have forgotten the pull over part. They simply stop right in the middle of the road.

I get honked at for topping in the right lane (should I drive up on the sidewalk?).

Idiots.

yeah that ticks me off.

on a 2 lane road everyone got over to the right side so the left was clear. a firetruck was comeing up fast. but a guy in a SUV wouldnt move over. the Firetruck was blareing its horn but the guy would not get over. finally they came to a red light and the firetruck was able to get by.

i was so hopeing it was that guys house of fire. sigh

My personal favorite, of which I had an example this morning, is when you're on a divided road and there is an emergency vehicle on the opposite side of the divider and everyone on your side of the divider slows to a crawl or dives for the right line without checking their mirrors.

News flash people, when the road's divided, you don't need to get over for an emergency vehicle coming in the other direction. There's really very little chance that the emergency vehicle will cross the median.

Just had an article about police cruiser wrecks in the paper yesterday. Essentially, most people turn stupid due to the illegals in their car, modded cars, broken lights, unpaid tickets and anything else that might get them in trouble. The funny thing was sirens actually become a beacon for people to drive into.
