Why do people still think cellphones are cool?

3 years ago they were a tiny bit cool. Not anymore since everybody and their dog has one, so why do people still think they're cool for using them? I was walking through the mall yesterday and apart from the fact that half the people have one on like a six-shooter from days of old people instantly get this air of arrogance about them when they answer or use their phone. I think cellphones in public are a non-violent way to show off as a gunfighter might have done 120 years ago.

I'm not saying its all bad. I have a phone too. I'm not even talking about the cellphone melodies right now - which should be a criminal offense BTW - I'm talking about the people who go to the mall just to be seen on their cellphone, or the people who go up to the food court and while ordering are "far too important" to stop yapping on the phone.

I was with a guy a year back and we were right in the middle of an order at a pizza place and his phone rang. Like an addict he was physically unable to avoid answering it. He then proceeded to tell the person on the other end that he was busy ordering food - all the while we have a lineup behind us and the clerk is looking at him like hes an imbocile.

I dont think its a matter of being "cool". Thats simply your perception. Its a matter of usefulness.

I agree ... And I can't stand people who use their cell constantly or hold up lines because of it but they incredibly useful so when people are out they have them so they can stay in contact ...

there will always be stupid people, occasionally they find new ways to demonstrate it to the rest of us.

What really peeves me is people who drive while blabbering on one. Everytime I see that, the person is paying more attention to the phone than they are to the road. Last time it happened, one woman came withing a hair's breadth of clipping me when she changed lanes into mine. :|

Why does it bother you that some people think its cool? Just let them be and have cancer from using it. You worry about yourself and not them. I personally have a cell phone. Its for convience reasons. Its my right to use it anytime I want to regardless of what other people think.

I think it's like a new piece of clothing or anything else... it's cool at first.. (that goes for almost anything new and techy that you buy).. but it wears off and it's just a phone. EDIT: ya.. like they said, I'll use it if i want to, i paid for it didn't i? :) only time it's not appropriate is TALKING in class, movies, work (sometimes), and on the road.

However, a lot of teenagers DO feel/think they're cool just for having one or talking on one. Someone else here shared a story about a girl who was walking talking on her phone when it started RINGING! THAT is classic. :) Some people have to stare at their phone and tell all their friends and NOT shut it off/sound during movies and whatnot because it makes them feel more important i suppose.

What's hilarious is when you catch some idiot "talking" on his phone when it suddenly rings. I've witnessed that a couple times.

I admit that when I first got my phone, I thought it was cool to wear.
That was several years ago. But now I just wear it due to usefulness.
The "cool" magic has been long gone.

Right now I've got two (no, not an ego thing) one is for emergences (personnel one) and one for business (I kinda need one for business)

What I really find funny though is that you see this person talking on a cell phone, and he's right BESIDE a telephone booth. I don't know about you, but I'd rather use a public phone (costs less money) when I can.

And cell phones can also be the curse from hell. When you can't be reached by phone, you can't be distrubed by what your doing.

I've seen a few replies to my threads by you in the past. I don't know exactly at what point it happened but somewhere along the line you've firmly got it in your head to put me down at any point you can. Oh well, carry on. Of course based upon your history I will ignore anything you say. BTW my first message was called a rant. If you don't like what I say don't read my threads.

BTW guys I'm not talking about their useful features. Like I said I have one too and they are useful. However if you're spending 30 min walking around the mall talking on it you've taken it to a new level :)

Not sure what kind of plan you have, but my 800 minutes a month for a flat rate make it a little bit cheaper to call my bro in Oregon. Rather that feed $14.25 into a payphone 1 quarter at a time.

Once every crackhead waiting for the bus had a cell, they became very common. I don't know why people still think it's cool but I do see a lot of deekeheads walking around with cells thinking they're the shiz.

people think they're cool using them because it makes them look important. you gotta admit the first time you got one, you felt hella important too. but yes the cool factor does die down.

i do agree that it's kinda dumb for people to be yacking on the cell phone for an extended period of time in public. especially the teenager because most likely their parents are eating the bill. i'd understand if you're talking to your lady or something but otherwise, i dunno. i do notice that everybody and their momma has a phone these day. first it's pager, now cellphones. i wonder what's the next phase.

speaking of phase, don't worry. everything in society happens in phases. pretty soon cellphones will be like blah. people will start using them less because they will realize it won't increase their chance of picking up a chick, etc.

I've never seen a phone that has that. When you have call waiting and receive a second call, the beep comes from the headpiece (where you hear people talk), not the phone.

rotfl. only in NY.

Since you did clarify skoorb, I guess that distracted drivers do get to me. Its ok if you dont make an arse of yourself. And especially teens with phones. No one under 30 should have a phone. :D j/k

I'm actually thinking of getting one for convience and emergency situations (car broken down etc.). But I'm worried about the stories I hear linking cancer with cell phones.

So, do you guys think cell phones are safe?

I bought a prepaid on the weekend and with it came a notice covering some stuff by the FDA and other companies. Basically the gist of it (I felt it was trustworthy info) is that we don't yet know for sure if they are safe or are not. What is safe to say, however, is that even if cellphones are bad using them infrequently is certainly quite safe. The real concern is people who use them 2-3 hours a day and nobody is even sure if that is bad. Using it a couple minutes a day is almost certainly totally safe.

BTW anybody interested in prepaid check out tracfone.com - although be warned they use analog phones (hence only 1-2 days on a charge standby). I checked 2-3 providers and found that for me verizon was the best. Although it cost me $125 upfront for phone (nokia 5185i), activiation, and $50 phone card unlike some other prepaid deals I thought this was the best one because your minutes last for 60 days. With cingular I believe it was a $30 card goes for 30 days, $60 for 60 days, etc. With verizon all go for 60 days and I plan on using it so infrequently that this works out to $15/month for me. Furthermore instead of $.33/minute all minutes with this phone at nights and weekends the rates drop to $.10/minute (great for a prepaid) and I can even call Canada for $.50 min which ain't too bad. Plus verizon is the nation's biggest wireless network.
