Because phone microphones are cheap?

I'm not talking cell phones, I'm talking phones in general. Sometimes I have a hard time figuring out who I'm talking to when I first pick up the phone.

Think about it... in person there is no wiring it has to go through... the person is right there... its the same principle as copying a copy of a tape... its not as good quality wise as the original

Because phones don't include the full range of the human voice. They cut out some highs and some lows.

Some phones suck. For the most part people sound about the same to me. However, those w/ crappy phones (terrestrial or cellular) sound crappy. Naturally the largest difference is w/ cellular.

Also when you are speaking to someone face to face you get vibrations in your bones that you don't receive over the phone....just like when you hear your recorded voice and swear you don't sound like the recording.

It's because that, back when phones were new, the wires they were using did not posess the bandwidth to transmit the full range of the human voice, so they had to cut some of it out.

phones transmit a very narrow frequency band, and the microphones and speakers are terrible. cell phones combine that with packet loss and other goodies to make it even worse.
