french foreign legion are regarded as one of the elite modern fighting forces.

edit: from what I have read, the training a contemporary (i.e., present day) foreign legion soldier is subject to is vastly more brutal/ punishing than anything the us marines would see.

I admit that the Legionaires are as tough as they come, but most of them aren't French. In the old days, many of them were Germans, I'm not sure now, but a lot of Eastern Europeans (ex military men) joined the Legionaires after the collapse of the Communist system back in the 90s. And somebody has mentioned that Napoleon was a Corsican, those guys have fire in their blood. The real French are good at many things, fighting to defend their own country is not one them. I guess to eyes of peacenik and future conquerors out there who like to march their victorious army under the Champs d'Elise, that's a good thing.

true, napoleon was corsican, but saying he wasn't french is like saying someone from hawaii is not american.

Look at this way, France is the only european country that has surviced for well over 1000 years in a coherent and independent form. Not only that, but until the beggining of the 20th century they were very powerful and were the center of the world for many centuries before that. You can't achieve something like this by being a 'wuss'.
