Wtf? Can people not understand that Iraq is pronounced "EEE-raq"? Seriously.. it's not that hard. And Iran is "EEE-ran". For Christ's sake!! It was a little annoying when many people still said it right, but now no one does. If we are going to attack a country we should at least know how to pronounce it's name!

What does it matter? At least you know what in the hell someone's talking about when they say it.

You need to take your PMS medicine.

It's called accent. People pronounce pecan 15 different ways, I don't hear you complaining about that.

I know the pronunciation from previous association with Arabic friends, but I don't know the best way to spell it phonetically. To me it's more like "eeuron" and "eeurack"

An accent doesn't affect which vowel sound you use.

The curve over the i indicates a short i sound, like in irresponsible or igloo. A straight line over the i would mean a long i like in ice cream. So...it's more like "EH-rak"

That's the same as a short "ee"... somewhere between "ee-rak" and "ih-rak".

There was a song about this:

Ella Fitzgerald

"Lets Call the Whole Thing Off"

Things have come to a pretty pass
Our romance is growing flat,
For you like this and the other
While I go for this and that,

Goodness knows what the end will be
Oh I don't know where I'm at
It looks as if we two will never be one
Something must be done:

You say either and I say either,
You say neither and I say neither
Either, either Neither, neither
Let's call the whole thing off.

You like potato and I like potahto
You like tomato and I like tomahto
Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto.
Let's call the whole thing off

But oh, if we call the whole thing off
Then we must part
And oh, if we ever part, then that might break my heart

So if you like pyjamas and I like pyjahmas,
I'll wear pyjamas and give up pyajahmas
For we know we need each other so we
Better call the whole thing off
Let's call the whole thing off.

You say laughter and I say larfter
You say after and I say arfter
Laughter, larfter after arfter
Let's call the whole thing off,

You like vanilla and I like vanella
You saspiralla, and I saspirella
Vanilla vanella chocolate strawberry
Let's call the whole thing off

But oh if we call the whole thing of then we must part
And oh, if we ever part, then that might break my heart

So if you go for oysters and I go for ersters
I'll order oysters and cancel the ersters
For we know we need each other so we
Better call the calling off off,
Let's call the whole thing off.

I say father, and you say pater,
I saw mother and you say mater
Pater, mater Uncle, auntie let's call the whole thing off.

I like bananas and you like banahnahs
I say Havana and I get Havahnah
Bananas, banahnahs Havana, Havahnah
Go your way, I'll go mine

So if I go for scallops and you go for lobsters,
So all right no contest we'll order lobseter
For we know we need each other so we
Better call the calling off off,
Let's call the whole thing off.

Some people say "pI-can" some say "pEE-can". I don't see how that's different than I-rack vs EE-rack.

I think rbloedow had a good thing to say! We all know where exactly someone is talking about if they say "eye-rack"....... and if they were to say "eee-rack", we would probably still know what they were talking about!!!! That's communication..... so get over it!

peace

Pih-can and peecan are the same, except for the length of the first syllable. It's just a matter of emphasis. What if someone said pie-can?

Look, it's a piece of shiat backwards dirty ass fourth world country with a crooked government. When they start acting civilized and playing nice with the rest of the world, then I'll make the effort to pronounce it correctly.

Hey, Doofus, Iran is prounounced P-E-R-S-I-A. PERSIA! Go study your history books. Just because we in the West spell it Iran doesn't change the fact that its proper name is Persia. If you don't believe me go to any 7-11 or liquor store in town and ask the Persian (Iranian) owner where he comes from.

That's what I'm saying. I've heard people say "Pie-can".

That's horribly incorrect, but I knew what they meant, just like you know what they mean when they say I-Rack.

Lol I'm imagining some redneck saying "pie-can". Anyway, that would be like that same redneck not being about to say "ee" and saying "ie" instead. People who pronounce pecan correctly pronounce Iraq incorrectly... it's not an accent.

I guess you didn't understand the song? Differing on the pronunciation of words is nothing new.
