i'm talking plain coffee, which would be a lot cheaper to brew at home instead of buying every day at some coffee shop.

The atmosphere, they are lazy, they don't care where they spend their extra money, maybe it is better than their plain coffee at home and they love it.

1. You're not near home.
2. You don't have time to brew coffee.
3. You can't brew a decent cup of coffee.
4. You don't own a coffee pot.

Why do you buy burgers from Burger King when you can just buy beef at the grocery store and cook a burger yourself?

They are consistent. You always know that you'll get the same old crap no matter where you go.
Atmosphere. They sell a certain look and feel that stays rather consistent with any store.
People don't know any better.

It also tastes better. Starbucks plain coffee is not very good.

I heard the same argument about beer and liquer but there always seems to be someone willing to drink it.

I live in Seattle, and rarely go to Starbucks. I always bring a thermos of coffee with me from home. I can't stand Starbucks coffee, and I don't understand how they can justify the ridiculous prices they charge for it.

He has a point. Drinking at home is a lot cheaper than going to a loud crowded bar but people do that too.

Why buy beef when you can shoot your own cow?

I wouldn't pay that much for regular coffee. But I will pay more to buy Starbucks grounds to make at home over Folgers. I will sometimes buy their espresso drinks but I also have an espresso machine. Depends on how much time I have or what I want.

Once and a while you just want a cup of joe and people usually don't have a cuisenart laying around in their back pocket.

The people that stop by a shop every morning and drop $3.00 for a cup of java on their way to work are pretty irresponsible though. Not that I don't have my own irresponsible actions...but spending that much a day when you can just buy a 12oz bag of Starbucks grounds for $6.00 and have it make 30 cups of coffee just seems dumb.

Make up coffee pot before going to bed...set the alarm on it to start working when your alarm goes off...shower...get coffee...go to work.

Really, it's quicker and cheaper to brew your own than it is to stop by a place and get it.

But you could say the same thing about going out for lunch, dinner, to the bar, ect. It's just coffee is so ridiculously overpriced compared to what you can do it for on your own and with as little effort.

people go to be seen... thats all, its somewhere to go that you can buy something for cheap and sit for long periods of time without having to order more than a coffee.

I used to like going to get coffee because i didnt have a good way to brew it at home, now though, i dont go to starbucks, caribu any more because i have gourmet coffee at home

Could be because coffee doesn't taste bad, unless it's bad coffee. It's an acquired taste, like beer, for a lot of people. With cream and sugar though, it's not even an acquired taste, it's just plain yummy.

They opened one down the street from our office in the summer. Tried it, ew - give me my Tim Horton's.

But there is something to be said of the comfy couches and jazzy music. I just find it hard when the person in front of me says, "I'll have a tall double mocha frappacino uber scoober delta omega chi buttfvck Idaho with 2.3 shakes of cinnamon, shaken, stirred twice, reshaken, with 1% milk instead of cream and Bavarian sugercubes on the side."

Then I walk up and say, "Uhhhhh, coffee?"

I've never bought anything at a Starbucks or any other coffee place. If I wanted to throw my money away, I'd do it at Best Buy.
