Why do people re-watch movies?

I've never understood this.

Comedy - you know all of the jokes.
Drama - you know where the climax is and how it's resolved.
Horror - similar to drama, and you know where the "make you jump" parts are.
Action - you've seen all the cool special effects already, heard all the one liners, etc.

Why re-watch, unless you've forgotten?

I usually forget most of the movie after 6 month to a year, so its like watching a new movie.

..or re-read a good book. If it's good it's worth revisiting from time to time.

Comedy - often jokes become funnier the more you hear/see them
Drama - to relive the experience or gain a new perspective on the film
Horror - eh, I don't watch much horror unless it's exceptional. In which case, I watch it again because it's exceptional.
Action - same as Horror

In general, I don't understand the thinking that movies aren't meant to be watched more than once (porn excluded).

Ever read a book more than once or look at a piece of art several times?

Often times I find that my perception of movies, like books and art, changes over time and experience.

There's a saying "any book worth reading is worth reading twice". It's the same with movies.

I watched Back to the Future when I was really little, loved it, mostly understood the plot and what not. Rewatching it again these days and I can appreciate jokes such as "I'm sure in 1985 plutonium is available at every corner drugstore, but in 1955 it's a little hard to come by." When I was little I didn't even know that was supposed to be a joke, now I find it pretty funny. It's like watching a new movie within one you've already seen, and it makes it even better.

Granted those situations are pretty unique.

I like the explanation already used regarding listening to songs over again, movies/TV are the same way. But just like with songs you need to do it sparingly or else it gets old, although I'd argue that the videos/movies/TV gets older quicker because it takes a lot more time to invest in - so you do have some point in watching them over and over and over.

A good way to keep it fresh is to try and watch the movies with others, especially if they haven't seen the movie yet because the experiences can be contagious.

I can watch comedies ( Simpsons, Green Acres, Gilligan's Island etc. ) over and over however, not dramas.

Why do you re-eat the same things you've eaten before? Why not try something new for every meal?

To imagine yourself in that moment.

Don't you ever imagine yourself working out in the middle of Siberia, fighting the 10 foot giant, and winning the eye of a hot girl while watching Rocky IV? :)

That is precisely why I don't rewatch anything that I enjoyed by plot anymore.
Of course many things don't fit under that category, like comedy. Can you really remember all the jokes?
