Why do people put those ugly white decals on their windshields?

The one I cannot figure out is why someone would pay the state $10.00 or whatever it costs extra per year for vanity plates that spell out the manufacturer or model of the car.

My plate says EC0TEC on it. Can't figure out why I'd put what motor on my plate? Well GM has had only 3 different 4 cylinders in their 3rd generation Cavaliers.
