Why do people put "fart cans" on their car?

I don't know why, but I've been thinking about this today. Do they feel their car gets really fast when they put a really loud muffler on? Do they just like the sound knowing it's slow?

I hear a ton of these mufflers at school everyday so it got me wondering

Well...people like the sound of vehicles...and people without V8's only real option is quiet or rice...

And they think it sounds like race cars like F1's...

Remember when you put baseball cards in your bike spokes?

Pretty much the same thing, except with cars, cause you can't really pick up chicks on a bike.

Once my cousin's muffler fell off of his truck. He was like.. ooh, this sounds great. I was like.. mmm.. i'm hungry.. oh, what noise?

How can you pick up chicks with a fart can?

I see it as a way of making the car seem faster to the owner and maybe even to others, I don't know that many 4 bangers will notice an improvement with it though; I have a v8 on the other hand with dual exhaust and cold air intake, that makes a real difference.

believe it or not, some enthusiasts enjoy modifying their cars as a hobby. There are plenty of "fart cans" (aka exhaust systems) that provide real-world gains without being too loud.

because it makes the engine sounds strong.... or something.

I've put a new exhaust on my 300zx... because the old one was rusted out. The neuspeeed exhuast does have a better note though, its mostly deep rumble rather than the fart noise :)

There's plenty of 4 bangers where it makes a huge difference. Intake and Exhaust knock nearly an entire second off of the quarter mile of the 2.5RS

Some people like a louder-than-stock exhaust note. I agree that often some people go beyond the limits of good taste and make it way too loud (which I hate as it drones down the highway), but I find that the right volume (for me, somewhat stealthy) and note improves the driving experience.

And contrary to almighty ATOT opinion, not all Hondas are slow (though most are). Quite a few run 12's all day every day at my local track.

The HKS Exhaust on my car MSRP's at about $700. Definitely cheaper than a "real muffler."

Eh, most exhaust systems that people call fart cans are probably more expensive than "real mufflers".

Not really. The most "farty" sounding exhuasts can often be bought on ebay for like $50 shipped for an axle-back.

Now performance exhuast systems that also are loud are many hundreds of dollars like others have mentioned.

My first exhuast was definitely a POS fart can. The one I'm running now sound really good, IMHO of course.

if the maxima was MY car, i would put an aftermarket muffler on it. not really loud, but more than stock for sure. even if the gains are minimal, you get a nicer sound. for those of you who watch top gear, the noise a car is important, even to *gasp* jeremy clarkson. also, a nice tone on your car makes your car stand out. you wanna be noticed, and you want people to know that its your car. everyones an attention whore. :p

anyways, im sure everyone has heard a nice exhaust note. theres an accord in my area that has enough rumble for you to know its not stock, but is far from annoying. thats perfect. when you can be heard more than a block away just driving normally, you're way too loud.

Heh. I was thinking of bringing this up. My GF's '01 2.5RS coupe went from the stock high-15's 1/4 mile to mid-14's with just an Injen CAI, Borla headers, and GReddy Evo cat-back (which might look like a fart can, but is actually rather quiet).
And before you think we paid too much, the headers and Exedy clutch came with the car when we bought it, and I picked up the CAI and GReddy used but in perfect condition for $200 (for both, not each) plus the stock cat-back in trade from another RS owner who was trading his in for an STi. :)

It doesn't matter how many cylinders your car's engine has. An engine is an air pump. The better the airflow, the better the real world performance.
