Why do people point with their middle finger?

You ever noticed this before, especially in teachers and older co-workers? They point at blackboards and papers with their middle finger. Why?!? I can't see any reason why they'd want to -- it's not as natural as pointing with your index finger, and it makes me think they're flipping me off! :|

Well, maybe they are flipping me off, but I didn't do anything to deserve it!

My grandfather points with hs middle finger. Of course that could be because he's missing his index finger.

yeahi noticed that older people do that too. even my dad does it!! it annoys me to no end. i can't even naturally do it with my own middle finger. ahh, one of life's mysteries.

And part of the reason I don't point with my middle finger is that I usually get a pain in my hand when I try to extend my middle finger. Just hurts.
