Why do people point with their middle finger?

You ever noticed this before, especially in teachers and older co-workers? They point at blackboards and papers with their middle finger. Why?!? I can't see any reason why they'd want to -- it's not as natural as pointing with your index finger, and it makes me think they're flipping me off! :|

Well, maybe they are flipping me off, but I didn't do anything to deserve it! ;)

My grandfather points with hs middle finger. Of course that could be because he's missing his index finger. :p ;)

They are used to using that finger around their significant others - and NOT to flip them off. Wink-wink. :D

And part of the reason I don't point with my middle finger is that I usually get a pain in my hand when I try to extend my middle finger. Just hurts.
