Why do people own ugly dogs ?

Or other animals for that matter: cats, birds, reptiles.... Granted, ugly is usually subjective but admittedly there are some universally accepted ugly azz animals people own: shih-tzus, hairless cats, pug, whatever.

The other day I saw a dog with the coolest personality -- it was a puppy and may have been a shih-tzu, I'm not sure. So the only thing I can come up with is that these pets are much cuter when they are young'uns, and since they grow up with you, you don't notice just how ugly your pet is.

Pugs are so ugly they end up being cute. My friend had a pug named "Liki-chin." You think it's a cool Chinese name, but it actually made fun of the fact that when the poor snoutless beast tried to drink from his water dish that he seemed to be getting more water all over his face than actually down his throat, and when he'd finally finish, there would be water pouring down his chin. Bulldogs, shih-tzus and chihuahuas are all cute in their own ways.

My grandma has a dog who is a cross between a Shih-tzu and a pomeranian.
He's a Shihtty Pom. As my grandma would call him.

Granted, shi*-sus and pugs are atrocious, but the worst is Boston Terrier. Then again, I hate all mini, yip-yip dogs.

 

Morkinova, I am sooo with you on that subject. The same question's been running on my mind. However, I was too scared to ask, lest I get eaten up by some animal crazed people. I can't stand it when people say "oh, he's so cute", "so beautiful", etc. to some really ugly dog, cat, etc. I think there are more ugly dogs than there are ugly cats. But those dogs that manage to be beautiful are extremely beautiful. If I ever own a pet, my pet (most likely a cat) has got to be beautiful. Getting an ugly one would spoil the whole show and the beauty I try to keep around me. :Q Hehehe!

For real though, your question is good one. I've been wondering the same thing. I just can't own an ugly pet or lie to someone that their pet is "cute" or "beautiful".

So the only thing I can come up with is that these pets are much cuter when they are young'uns, and since they grow up with you, you don't notice just how ugly your pet is.

The best watch dog I have ever owned was a ShiTzu. Nobody could come near my house, night or day, without her raising hell. Also, despite the fact that she was the laziest animal that was ever born, she would attack any dog no matter how big.

I would argue that it's a conglomeration of two important factors:

1) Dogs in general have been domesticated, meaning that it's not considered unreasonable to own dogs
2) People can't stop ugly dogs from having sex
