Why do people not learn from the lessons of others?

Lets say I suffered for hours trying to figure something out and eventually find out that if I did it the other way it would be much easier and much better. Now enlightened with this new information, I tell family members not to do it the way I was trying it out because they'll come to the same result but decide to ignore me and go through the same frustrations I had?

You have to fall on your face yourself to learn.

If we all learned our lessons from others, life would be easy.

On the side of my toolbox at work:

One sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

I learn.
I've never had problems with alcohol or smoking. I've never gotten a girl pregnant.
Never had a DUI. Never shot myself. Never been in jail. Still not married.

I learn a lot from other people. When I heard about a girl who got pregnant after 5th grade and saw a friend get pregnant after 6th grade, I learned a whole lot about life right then and there.
