I have 3 pieces of equipment (test equipment) designed for rack mount use. A nice rack would be useful :)

My friend keeps a server rack in his house because he mirrors info off site to his basement. He also has racks of PC's that looks like a big colo in his basement. Crazy stuff.

I think the real question is, why don't MORE guys have server racks in their homes.

I have 2 racks in my home. They hold my dvd changer, my cd indexing library, 2 amplifiers, my fileserver, my firewall/router, my scsi array, my imap home, my switch, my network terminal, my dvd player, 2 vcrs, and I put a small fridge in there as well.

Note -- Not all my servers are seperate machines...my webserver and imap home are the same machine, for example.

dosen't it make sence to mount your expensive equipment on a rack?

to me it looks like he's got a router and a switch (explains the bundle of yellow cables) two other thingamajiggers, and two rack mount servers, one possible being a HTPC because in the next shot he shows some kilpsch speakers mounted to his ceiling in the ajoining room.

... just a guess though ;)

I'm down to 2 from the 4 I originally had in my server closet (seperate air conditioner for it also). I need it because I have alot of equipment for the house, for play, and for work. Couple servers, home control equipment, whole house audio, ups's ect. Has to go somewhere and the racks makes it somewhat easier to manage.

(mid atlantic for home GKM for work)

And let's not forget all the innuendo that becomes available with ownership of a rack when speaking to women that would normally garner a smack in the face.

EX:

"That's a nice rack there, doncha think?"
"There are few things as nice as mounting my stuff inside that sweet rack"
"I'll show you mine if you show me yours"

They cost a pretty penny, but I know for a fact that many universities toss racks when they get new ones instead of shifting them over. It's how I got both of mine.
