Why do people love french fries?

I was daydreaming yesterday at Burger King, and started wondering why people love their french fries so much. I mean, it's just processed potato, grease, and salt, right?

In medical school they told us that the reason why McDonald's fries taste so good is that they use surfactant (a liquid that keeps your lungs from collapsing) in their french fry oil. Whatever it is, they taste damn good.

Because they are easy to eat, salty, and cheap.

There are always shows (or at least parts of shows) on the History Channel and Food Network about the history and love of French fries.

One could ask the same question about potato chips, corn chips... any kind of snack really.

instead of questioning it, we should enjoy them while we can. undoubtedly, all fried foods will eventually be outlawed.
we should all try to enjoy meat as often as possible, as well. meat will probably be next on the chopping block ;)

Why would that make them taste good?

Also, they aren't that good.

yay, i'm not the only food experimenter here!
a while back, i was at shari's with my gf. she got some kind of shake (possibly chocolate) and i got the ravioli dippers. i jokingly said "these are dippers, so you should dip one in your shake and eat it." of course, she replied "no, you should do it." so i did!
it was actually a lot better than i had expected it to be :)

french fries combine several elements that appeal to our natural instincts for food gathering.

When you are hunting/gathering and your options are dandelion leaves or french fries your body is going to favor the fries cuz they are

A) Fatty (therefore lots of long-lasting calories)
B) Salty (salt is hard to come by without processing)
C) Starchy (therefore lots of easy to process calories)

In the modern world with tons of easily available foods, these traits become something of a liability due to the ease in which fats, simple carbs and salt can be overconsumed.

I love fries though i don't get to eat them that often anymore. Honey mustard was from Bennigans was my favorite topping for them.

There was that one website that showed what inmates on death row asked for for their final meal. A lot had french fries.
