Why do people like the fireplace in the middle of the wall?

I went to see my cousin's new house a few weeks ago. When I walked into the large living room, there was a big fireplace in the middle of the wall and a Samsung LCD TV hanging on the wall above the mantle. The middle of the TV was probably 8 feet off the ground. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but I prefer to have the center of my TV closer to eye level while I'm sitting in a chair.

I'm getting married in about 4 months, so I've been looking at houses online for a while now. I've noticed a lot of houses that have the fireplace in the middle of the wall and then a TV sitting in the corner. I have 5.1 speakers, so having the TV in the corner just isn't going to work for me.

so you want the fireplace to be 8 feet off the floor?

Get a house with an entertainment room (no fireplace) and a living room (with a fireplace)

You live in LA. Of course you aren't going to understand why a fireplace is located centrally in a living room.

personally, TV is a waste of time. computer games pretty much took up TV time. you weigh it out for your own indivitual interests.

with TV you get entertainment and get flashed at advertising like crazy. TV is totally uncontrollable, especially in our time. so you never know what's comin' your way, most Americans don't turn off the TV if they see something they don't like, they just change the channel. one reason why your high school kids are so jaded these days, 'cuz a majority of them think that turning to "something" else that is more interesting to them is the only way out of hard times, for example. but not all television is the same for everyone. some people only use it to watch news, others just watch CNN and boxing and almost absolutely nothing else. or just have on in their living room, 'cuz everyone else in America seems to have one in their living room or wherever.

computer games can be better or worse depending on what you play. some people don't watch TV or play video games at all. both can be addictive anyhow. preference, I'd prefer video games over television. movies are different though. if you want to hear it, I'm addicted to Starcraft, that's why I'd prefer a PC over a TV anyday.

Over here where I live our rooms have 4 walls ;)

So, like in my living room for example, the fire place is in the middle of one wall so I just put my TV is the middle of another wall.

Try looking for more expensive houses maybe. I think you eventually find one where the rooms have 4 walls. :)

Because people are dumb and buy houses and other things with the intent to show off. To them, having a fireplace in the middle of the wall is like having a showcase on The Price is Right. It's the same reason people will buy big generic houses with no trees anywhere near, a big ugly lawn, and some ridiculous looking Mexican maintained flowers, in a cookie cutter neighborhood without sidewalks and a huge lake that took the place of a beautiful forest. The TV itself only serves the purpose of impressing their friends by showing stretched out SD programs and "upscaled" DVDs. People are just plain stupid.

I think you missed the point.

Then why have it?

You're 100% right about rooms like this. I have a friend who lived with her parents through college because they were close enough to commute to school. They had probably a 15 x 20 foot room for a "living room" with really expensive looking furniture and a fancy decor. They NEVER used it. It was basically a glorified hallway because they just walked through it to get to their kitchen.

But hey, it's an extra 600 square feet in the house, that's got to count for something, right?

I think TV's are better when they're at eye level, but not everybody values TV's as much as they value where their fireplace is. Stupid or not, everybody's different.

Most homes like that were built long before television when sitting around the fireplace and chatting with neighbors and family was the main form of entertainment. My how anti-social the world has become since then.

That would be 300, but yeah I think a formal living room is pretty pointless nowadays.
