Why do people lie?

So we've got a login-required website. Some girl stole someone's password and has been accessing it from both her work and her home for a month or so now. We found out through one of her friends and asked her about it, she vehemently denied it. So i scanned for both of her IP addresses and found her accessing it from both IPs regularly. She still denies it.

I mean...I'm not even that upset that she used the password to get on the site. Apparently she didn't "steal" it but heard from a friend. Ok, unethical, but a lot of people would do that. But why is she continually lying? We've already told her that we have proof she is doing it. Yet she continues to lie, to some of her best friends.

I hate people.

Seriously, it works for politicians, why not the common man.

I will tell you the main reason I see it so often at work.
Work is not a court of law. It isnt good enough that you have overwhelming evidence.
If the person denies it constantly and they have a wimpy supervisor, the odds are pretty good that nothing will come of it. No punishment or corrective action or suspension of privileges or anything.

There is also the standard aspect of "if you lie long enough, you believe it yourself".
Why feel guilty about having done something if you really dont think you did it?

Cowardice, among other reasons.

If I don't want to tell someone the truth about something, then I don't say anything at all.

In my experience it's like breathing for some people. They don't think about it and often don't even know they're doing it, it just comes naturally. My mother is a compulsive liar, growing up in that sort of environment was strange to say the least. To this day when I talk to her, asking her the most basic questions, you can almost hear the gears turning in her head to come up with an obvious answer. She literally pauses and has to think about how to answer "How's the weather?"

the best is when a girl who I know for a fact is NOT a virgin tries to tell me she still is.

I've pretty much just ignored any such statements my entire life.
The odds of finding one nowadays in America are slim.

Didnt realize it at the time, but when I was in junior high an INSANE number of girls already had sex. Usually with senior high guys.
It seemed like most of them had at least oral sex by graduation, and some of them gave away their virginity on prom night.
I also learned (eventually) that the ones who were running around bragging about how proud they were to be virgins and were going to wait until their wedding night fell into two catergories:
They already had sex and were ashamed to give it up so easily or they did it with the first loser they met in college.

her response to me questioning her:

as i said before.. it looks very much like its me, gets tracked to me... undeniable proof in fact as u said ip addresses n compters which i somewhat tried to explain and could give more detail to... but congrats u did a great job of figuring that out, but im continuing to say [I didnt go on your website] ..... [I'm not worried what anyone else thinks of me otherwise I'd try to clear things up]

she talked on length, I shortened it

Honestly....we have undeniable proof it was her, yet she still insists.

I don't get it! we've all told fibs here and there, but when you're found out...just ****** admit it!
