I have to agree. I have never experienced the amount of frustration with a product that I do with Battlefield 2. I'm surprised my wife hasn't thrown my home workstation out the window, because I always walk away from almost every BF2 session VERY pissed off and hostile. BF2 is probably the biggest shame in modern gaming. Why? Because you probably have some of the best gameplay design/mechanics to date, but it all runs atop one of the most poorly written engines to date. One thing I really don't understand is why don't companies like DICE/EA license an engine. Engine development is obviously not their strong suit, so in addition to cutting down development time, they can also implement their ideas using a proven product.

It really chaps my ass that BF2 suffers from problems that other developers solved 5 years ago. The most glaring of these problems is the netcode and the server browser. I couldn't possibly tell you how many times I was killed in a chopper because the server recalculated my position about 500 yards to the left and at a 90 degree angle from upright. Other times I might be sniping from a building top, prone in the same position for several minutes, and the server will suddenly reposition me 5 feet forward, thus sending me careening into the concrete.

This is in addition to a completely fouled sound subsystem that doesn't work with EAX, despite the fact that EA and Creative are pimping one another on their respective websites. Basic video resolutions like 1280 x 1024 are not supported, let alone any of the widescreen resolutions. The server browser is so poor that it's motivated countless private parties to write their own. Worse, is that when people's game crashes to the desktop, they receive absolutely ZERO information from the program as to what happened.

The folks behind the Battlefield series are absolute geniuses when it comes to gameplay, but they really need to leave engine development to the pros. They'll get to market faster and we'll get a much higher-quality product.

I'm sorry about the rant... I really needed to get that off my chest.

Hmmm, it runs smooth on my 6800GT.

Mine too... until I fire up multiplayer. Then I get teh pwn by the netcode.

(no problems in CS:S, UT2004, or any other multiplayer game, though)

Which is of course the minimum requirements and the typical system that the average gamer is running these days...

EA makes good games, or good concepts for games, but their game support is abysmal. I have been playing EA games such as Jane?s 668i Hunter-Killer and Subcommand and these games have a cult like following of war sim enthusiasts and former navy types. These games use realistic environmental modeling and it took a few years of a letter/email/petition campaign to get EA to fix 688i, Subcommand still has a few issues?

Well judging from the multiplayer performance, I imagine that's the amount of bandwidth needed to accommodate the shoddy netcode.

that's some monstrous bandwidth...

and to answer the question: people buy crap products because they don't research said products in order to discover the inherent crapitude.

What's the connection between Intel and BF2?

Holy crap, this thing doesn't have a swear filter? It just trashed my whole post. Anyways, not going to redo it all but I'll just say that I don't think that's the entire reason. Part of it is the lethargic nature of our society where the information is available to everyone, but nobody bothers looking for it (we'd rather someone else tell us or do the looking). Another thing to consider is that we've become so accustomed to mediocrity that we'll put up with shoddy products and pay good money for them.

I think Microsoft is a perfect example of this, maybe a tired cliche but IMO still a good one. They have no incentive to really improve their product do they? They're still selling loads of copies of Windows and a higher price than ever it seems. If people started flocking to Linux then maybe MS would improve their product, but then again they might add even more useless junk that just wastes precious resources. :D

Nothing. It has everything to do with the first part of the OP: Please stop supporting companies that dont support us.

Most of the issues with BF2 multiplayer are directly attributed to how punkbuster updates and the ranking system. EA needs to put more money into the ranking server, something they obviously don't want to do. I don't know the technical aspects of the punkbuster issue, but many people (including me) got horrific lag until manually updating punkbuster outside the game.

How frequently does the PB client udpate? Would it be worthwhile to manually update it each day before playing, or is it just updated on a weekly/monthly basis?

People keep buying crap products because they love spending their hard earned money on games that clearly are not finished. Or at least thats the message they are sending companies like EA.

If you buy the buggy game, you've already lost the battle. They've got your money, they'll throw you an update when and if they feel like it.
