Why do people insist on using webmail?

I'm not talking about ISPs that have webmail as a secondary method of access - I'm talking about sites like Hotmail that allow webmail as the ONLY method of accessing their messages. It takes HUGE amounts of resources to run a webmail server - and the popularity of many of these places drives service into the ground and makes the sponsors want to do nasty things like sell email lists.

Every ISP I've seen lately offers you somthing like 5 email accounts for FREE with your account. Why doesn't anyone use these?

but if you switch isp, you would have to give out new email address again, it's like switching cell phone companies, it's a pain in the ass.
 
I use hotmail (I hate it and wish it was yahoo) because it's accesible anywhere and has exceptional reliability, which is something I can't say for any ISP I've ever used.

My personal server runs squirrelmail. I can check that anytime too, or use putty and SSH into it.

not everyone has a personal server running squirrelmail
 
it's easy to check from anywhere that has internet. not that i want carry my laptop and have to find a place to plug it in so i can check it through thunderbird.

i use hotmail alot and it's great.

thats exactly why i use hotmail 😀

 
So i can have a spam mail account.. i prefer not to make multiple isp accounts to receive spam.

And because i had my hotmail account WAY before my isp ever had webmail accessibility.. so now i just use the hotmail as my registering email for jumk mails.
 
I would never use my ISP's e-mail because I would usually switch to whatever ISP had the lowest rate at the time (including the free ones until they all went under). Now that I have comcast cable though I doubt I'll be switching ISPs anytime soon but it's become habit I guess.
 
I've had my hotmail account since 1996. It's just what all my friends and relatives know as my email address.
