ok, i recently called my local Gamestop to see when I could expect my xbox 360:

I asked,

the guy on the phone says "ok, well unfortunatly you are very low on the waiting list"

I say, "ok, thats fine"

He then goes, "yea, sorry to say but you probably wont be recieving your console untill around Christmas time.."

I say, "thats perfect"

He paused, and seemed very confused that I didn't really care. Because I dont.

So why must people have to have these things?

In two years from now, when I am still playing my 360 (maybe) will I really care that I recieved my system a month after launch?? Absolutley not.

Same reason why people buy games on release day, go to movies on release day, go to a restaurant on opening day, buy cars when they're just released. Because they're so anxious to experience the experience that they can't wait to get their hands on it.

Yes, they do. In fact I'm ultrasuperpissed that the EB Games that I preordered at isn't opening until 9 on Tuesday morning. They were going to do a midnight release but changed their minds for no apparent reason. They are only getting 12 in too, good thing I was the 6th person to preorder. :)

My take on it is that kids want to be able to talk with a bunch of people who all shared the same experience at the exact same time. If you get it on Launch dya, chances are a lot of other people did too, thus they are able to revel in their accomplishment along with a bunch of other nerds. Er.. I mean kids.

Well, because EVERYBODY has already been waiting 6 months for the thing already, just like you. Some people would rather not wait another 2 months.

I find it funny that you try to act the better person, when you did, infact, place a preorder so you could have it the first day. If you didn't care, then why place the preorder in the first place?

I sold my PS2 the day it came out for $600 and never looked back. I never bought another one either.

Opening the store for maybe 12 people to pick up a console doesnt make much sense really, may as well do it during regular business hours.

Who knows, I'm gonna go cancel my preorder right now anyways, regardless of when I might get mine. I'll just wait a year or two.

I'm just going to wait. I want to get a HDCRT and a I'm working on my DVR box first. After that I'll get the 360.

for the same reason people need to see movies the first or second day they come out. Not only do you save money if you wait untilt hey're on DVD, but you get tons of reviews from friends who couldn't wait. if it's worth seeing, you can see it after a month or two.

same with consoles. or any other hardware. If you wait, you save money, effort and emotional stress. :)

Not really. My eb store, where I have my preorder, told me that I'd have better luck at best buy or walmart, and explained each stores exact procedure for selling units.

Generalized blanketing statments ftw!

Well, thats a little bit different. I personally enjoy the experience of going to the movie. My home theatre consisting of a 27" Tau and no extra audio isn't that amazing. And my attention span wont become an issue.

I can understand the desire to have a system on release day, but I can't understand people's willingness to pay twice as much or more to get it off eBay right away.

He probably sounded like that because normally he gets yelled at by idiots who need to have it for no reason.

It's really materialism. Same reason why people have to own 100+ DVDs when they're only going to watch them an average of 0.4 times per DVD...yep those people with half of them still in wrappers.

I used to be like that with video games.

I'd like to buy an Xbox 360 for games, but honestly I can't justify it. I don't have an HDTV, and I won't until I graduate from college. I have a PC that will play COD2 and Oblivion just fine. It looks like Rare's games are average:

No games and no display = no sale.

I'll pick one up in a year for a lot less and let that money that I would have spent grow in investments.

Given that there aren't that many good games out on launch day, if any, there's not much of a point in not buying it later, when more games are available, there's not such a crush to fight to get one, and the price may have dropped by then.
