I just classify mine as the server... it really isn't :)
there really is no need in any home environment for a server honestly.
a server type PC is one thing, but actually using it as a server is another.

Because some people have numerous friends that game and so they will set up a dedicated server so that they can all just jump on and play there instead of searching all over for a good server.

There's many reasons to have a server for your own.

These aren't servers in the traditional sense, because they're not setup to store tons of data or anything.

People get hungry. They eat and in a few hours they get hungry again! Thank goodness for the servers!

Cheers!

Really though, it's also for modem sharing , security, and gaming servers. It can also be used for a single location for Backups.

Sorry my thaughts are jumbled, but I'm watching the episode of Family Guy where death gets injured.

I've considered it around our house primarily to store files that we seem to use on all the other systems. That way I don't need to make sure PC A is turned on so that my wife can spend money out of the Quicken data files!

The only reason I would do it, rather than just considering it, is because I have a spare PC needing to be put to use. Even this is just a file server, not a real server. I already have a standalone printer server (not a PC) and a hardware firewall/router for the cable modem, so those aren't considerations.

I doubt that I will ever do it, though.

I use to wonder the same thing until I ended up with 2 laptops and 2 workstations and got tired of powering on all the machines to get a document on one machine to work on another. Now I consider the Server the most critical part of my home network. It stores every music and photo file that I have aquired in my lifetime. I have my drives in the Server set up as a RAID 1 Array for security. I use my Server as a central place to store files that I can use with the different computers I own.

Servers are for power users!

I have 2 servers, seperate Domains, 4 pc's 1 laptop in all. I will be using them to study networking. From there i hope to take some MS Certs. Without the hands on it would be very difficult i think.

I guess you can host websites on a server, home or anywhere.

Edit: I know a guy who did this and made a living at it. That was maybe 1996, though.

I have a gaming server...It started soon after we got BF1942, we would play that for hours on end, but the person who was hosting was always getting crappy game play. So my brother and I pooled our money and built a game server. Its one of the best things we ever did....It also works great that if a component from either my computer or my brothers goes out we have a computer that we can steal parts out of untill we get it replaced.

I'm just now putting together a media server. Mostly it will house flac and ogg files of my cd collection (about 600 GB) and backups of work files and ghost images (about 100Gb). Also, since it will be one huge case with a bunch of hard drives (and fans to cool them), I can stick it somewhere out of the way and not worry about the noise.

File sharing is perfectly legal
Sharing copyrighted material in a manner not in accordance with the license/copyright label - that is illegal. :)

hmm ... I have 2 servers, one is used as a dedicated BF1942 server (slackware) , though I do have web and FTP services up and running for my own lan.
My primary server (Mandrake) runs nat/firewall(iptables), ftp, www, db, samba, and eggdrop.

My server simply sits in the corner and downloads. That's it :)
Because it's a Celeron 400, it doesn't use much juice and it's pretty quiet, plus I can Remote Desktop into it should the need arise.

Thats what we use ours for, synchronized backups to the file server to prevent catastrophic data loss.

I have:
1 firewall
1 game server
1 FTP/HTTP server
1 "general purpose" server, running NTP, DNS, Nagios, and some other stuff.

I like computers :)

Mine does a bunch of things, including the typical lightweight web/php/mysql/file serving duties, weather station software, and I record/stream tv shows with beyondtv. On top of that, I have my sheet feeding scanner so I can easily turn a stack of paper copies into stored images at the touch of one button.

Server and "Server Like" , two diff things. I consider a Dual Opteron/Xeon w/ raid 5 hot swap a "Server". Most ppl have desktops performing server duties. Main reason is that computers are soo cheap nowadays.

If I understand the question correctly, it is why do people setup their own home based game servers.

I've ben running a dedicated game server from my basement for about 4 or 5 years now, and for 2 years prior to that I was running a non-dedicated server from my only home computer.

Why?

Mainly because I enjoy having control over every aspect of the game, from when it starts up and shuts down each day to who plays, who are the admin, what are the gameplay rules and so on. Not to mention that there is always a spot for myself and my son and we always have great latency. It's been a great hobby and a lot of fun.

I've been doing this way before I was ever aware of any rentable servers and the cost is probably comparable over the long run.

For security.. I have a domain controller that controls access to any resource. It also hosts Exchange and web/ftp and is connected to the printer. The server is the only computer sure to be on all the time so I can shut down any other computer on the network safely
