Why do people hate Windows Media Player?

I think its decent except that it doesn't have DVD plugins built in and it rips only WMA's on your system, why do you hate it(any version)?

I like WMP9 much more than 8. I've started using it for my MP3s, I like some of the cataloguing features it has.

The reason people don't like it is that it is "bloated" and takes up a lot of system resources. I think it also has digital copyright protection features that other players don't have.

I use it an love it. It's not very bloated at all, IMO. Sure, it has lots of stuff I don't use, but resource wise it is not bad. It has great cataloging and playlist features. It also supports digital copyright stuff, but you can turn off all that.

I like version 6.4 but that's it. That's all I use.

Any media players that try to add worthless skins or other "eye candy" are a waste of time.

Straight from the horse's mouth. 😀

I guess you will have to excuse those of us who like to personalize our PCs with such "eye candy". You can get skins for virtually any media player these days.

I use PowerDVD for video (it plays everything I throw at it) and foobar for audio. I don't like WMP because it tends to hijack file formats for itself.

It's cool....not a personal attack. I've just gotten over it and don't think any performance hits, no matter how small, are worth it just to have buttons that look a bit different. Function is always more important than form. Come to think of it, maybe that's why Macs ........ Never mind, I won't get into it. 🙂

i just plain dont like it. i dont know why. ive never liked it. hell, i like realplayer more than wmp for streaming movies and things. *shrug* im a winamper for life w/ mp3s though.

I am kind of confused also about this, you can play DVD's on WMP, but some people say you need plug ins such as these. I don't know why...

I thought WMP 8 and up had that wonderful little TOS that said Microsoft reserves the right to disable any software on your computer that it wants to.

If this has changed, let me know. I might upgrade.

I don't know that many people hate Windows Media player except for maybe that its Windows and people would enjoy a more
open player. However i Know you can use WMP under wine.

now I hate Real Player and Quicktime.

And under linux i just usually use mplayer and its works fine.
