Over the years ACLU has been taking on a lot of cases that piss people off. When you look back at the cases they took on back then, though, it seems like they do the right thing. They might not be popular, but they were right on a lot of occasions.

I'm wondering how people feel about the ACLU these days...

For me it is their hypocritical stance on the 2nd Amendment.

Seconded.

I also think they've gone too far on some religious issues (like the Boy Scouts being banned from a public park in San Diego).

I don't hate everything the ACLU does. I disapprove of them advertising themselves as defenders of the bill of rights when they only pick a few amendments that they like. I also dislike them for being excessively anti-christianity (boy scout cases).

Never hated them. I think they provide a good service but their recent track record has me worried about them.

WAAAAAH! If you took half a second to actually look at they're record, you'd see that's completely untrue.

Most often, you are correct. But in a few cases they have gone way too far. The BSA case is one. Other cases are those banning private religious displays on public property (which so long as every belief has equal access can is no way be deemed a violation of the establishment clause).

They just champion the cause, it's the judicial system that gets it wrong (or right)

Oh I agree. But they still go too far in the causes they choose to champion.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an agnostic and a firm supporter of a complete seperation of church and state.

And I don't agree with some of their causes they champion. That still doesn't mean that they are wrong or bad. IMO it's the Judicial system who should be faulted or praised if a cause the ACLU Champions were to prevail.

People like or dislike them based on the causes they champion, regardless of whether or not they win.

Dam I thought I was going to be the first to bring this up. Any group that would defend this group has some issues in my book.

The ACLU must be doing a great job! Everybody hates them.:D

Personally I don't agree with everything they do but I send them money because they are a necessary organization. How many individuals have the resources to take on some of the death penalty cases? The cases where the government is running roughshod over the Constitution ala Jose Padilla?

Without the ACLU Asscroft would be much more vigorous than they he can be with them around.

Somebody on these forums has/had a statement somthing along the lines:

"If you don't have a neighbor that advocates something that completely revolts you, you don't live in a democracy".

True statement that.

Um, no. The true statement would be, "...you don't live in a constitutional republic founded on the concept of inalienable individual rights."

A pure democracy is one of the most dangerous systems to individual liberties. The people have the right to vote down anything that is unpopular.

Remember, a pure democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.

Cause people are reactionaries.

But the ACLU is all about protecting individual liberty and BoR. Like this most recent case. How would like if the IRS could seize your assets based on secret reports to 'Special Trial Judges' that are not disclosed to the accused? Well that's what's going on today and ACLU is on it before SC right now in Kanter v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue

My only problem with them is major liberal failing in the second amendment.

I have noticed that some people only want Constitutional protection for themselves, their familiies and friends, and people who look and think like them.

The ACLU pisses some people off because it supports everybodies constitutional rights.

Except the constitutional rights of gun owners, private property owners and business owners.

Let's face it, the ACLU has a socialist, anti gun history and it's only grown worse over the years.

There are some cases where the ACLU messes up and is totally wrong. But i tend to think that as a whole, the ACLU is a great organization for the American people. It keeps our liberties alive

because of their hypocritical stance on religion.

didnt they pressure a small town in California to take a cross from the towns seal, and yet they wont pressure LA to remove some Greek goddess from their seal? If you're going to attack one religion, be consistent and attack them all.
