Is it because the lawyer sucked you dry during your divorce, something that your former wife never could achieve? :Q

Is it because Johnny Cochrane is such a likeable fellow? ;)

You be the judge...

Its cause when we "know" that somebody did something bad *OJ cough cough*, and lawyers still defend the person it bugs us...everyone deserves a fair trial but its hard to like a person defending a serial killer even if that killer should get access to the law.

Methink Denis knew this though and just wanted to start a discussion :)

Maybe not all, but a good majority of lawyers seem to lack basic morals and ethics. :(

Win at all costs, and screw the truth, is the way a lot of them work. So the people with a lot of money can buy a victory in court.

Also the way some of them discourage people of modest means from getting their day in court by making the cost to compete too high - constant appeals designed to bleed the other party dry until they cave in.

I have a good friend, a brilliant girl, who became a lawyer. She quit after two years(!) because she felt she couldn't be a good lawyer and maintain her ethics at the same time.

No offense, Frenchie! You don't seem to be like that.

the only good lawyer is a dead lawyer.

It's cuz of lawyers we've got litigation. I say go back to the Code of Hammurabi .. eye for an eye and all that jazz.

Because they're society's bloodsucking leeches. They live off pain, misery, and misfortune. Whenever lawyers drink coffee they like it black, LIKE THEIR HEARTS!!!

I think the reason lawyers are stereotyped as such is one, their prices. Lawyers don't come cheap. Another reason is the idea of corruption, ie if you pay your lawyer enough, he/she will pay off the judge and you will walk free. Not all lawyers are like this, but it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch and boom stereotype is born.

Jeez louise, I find it impossible to believe all of you have the experience with attorneys you would need to support categorical condemnations like "lawyers are scum of the earth."

I am an attorney in public service (specifically, in the Air Force), and I can tell you all from experience that many, many lawyers are not unethical, dishonest, or immoral. Frankly I am confident that as individuals, physicians are every bit as egotistical and greedy as attorneys, but they do not bear nearly the same brunt of public dislike.

I believe the real reason people dislike attorneys is that it appears to the outsider to be a profession with a rather lax, elastic set of morals and ethics. Obviously lawyers are paid to advocate on behalf of their clients, and this may require them to zealously argue in favor of causes that vary wildly, and may seem repugnant to others in some instances.

In addition to chasing ambulances and freeing rapists (the stereotypical mental images of attorneys held by many laypeople), lawyers prosecute criminals, defend the innocent, and otherwise work to preserve the public peace. Unlike doctors, all lawyers are expected to perform pro bono work. We are not all bloodsuckers or amoral self-promoters. I for one was motivated to practice law by the example of my mother, who has been a judge for 17 years, and who is my role model for her humanity and interest in public service.

I love lawyer jokes as much as anyone, but I ask you to at least give a moment's thought before you criticize a profession without regard to its individual practitioners.

How many attorneys does it take to roof a house? It depends how thin you slice them.

A man enters a lawyer's office to enquire about his services.

"I am interested in hiring an attorney. How much do you charge?"

"I get $1000 to answer three questions," the lawyer replies.

"That's a lot," the man says. "Are you any good?"

"I'm the best. Now what's your third question?"

Did you hear about the terrorists who hijacked a 747 full of lawyers this morning? They are threatening to release one every hour until their demands are met.

Actually, that doesn't bother me at all. It is the lawyer's job to do everything in their power to achieve a successful outcome for their client. To do less, would be true immorality because it is theft of the fee charged.

In that particular case, it was a stupid jury and an incompetent judge that allowed a murderer to go free.

The lawyers that really suck are those that are commonly known as ambulance chasers. The kind that will take any stupid case, no matter how frivolous, as long as the defendant has sufficiently deep pockets. You know who they are because you find their ads sandwiched between infomercials in the middle of the night.

Oh, and I'm not real fond of divorce lawyers, either.

A small example on why people think about lawyers the way they do:

A lawyer initiates a class action law suit, he/she gets a bunch of people to join in a claim against a company, usually a big company. The case is settled before the lawyer has to actually go through a trial. The typical settlement?

Each "plaintiff" gets $5
The lawyers get hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Do we really need to say any more?

In response to Tee_Edwards, I think professionals (Doctors, Lawyers, etc.) who give up potentially big pay checks to practice for the military should be commended. I think the military holds their Lawyers to a much higher standard. Plus, last time I checked, the military did not pay Lawyer Captains any more than the rest of the Captains out there.

As in any profession, there is always a group that can screw things up for all of the good guys.

Unfortunately (sigh), you are right, and I (unlike a doctor) am paid as a garden-variety AF captain. Thanks for your kind words.

Overheard some surgeons talking.
First surgeon asks, "What kinds of people do you like operating on?"
Second surgeon says, "I like operating on accountants. They're parts are all neatly arranged."
Third surgeon says, "Lawyers are easiest - no heart, no guts, and the head and the ass are interchangable."
