Why do people hate campers so much in CS?

It always confuses and eritates me when people start crying about campers. If someone has found a good position where they have a wide angle of fire but are still well concealed what's wrong with that? That player is playing intelligently, not just firing blindly on auto-fire. If that's all you want to do go play Quake.

I especialy hate it when someone knows a sniper is out there but still walks into plain sight, dies, and then complains about it. People like that deserve to die. Instead they could find another way around (there always are), they could use a flashbang or smoke grenade, or one person could go out and provide cover fire while the rest advance. A sniper rifle doesn't have auto-fire.

I've also seen people complain when someone is hiding around a corner and shoots them. If you don't check around corners and other sources of cover you're an idiot asking to die.

I'm not a huge camper but I do camp sometimes. And quite often I end up getting flamed for it. Why?

Because most CS players have never experienced anything close to real combat, that's why. A smart soldier is one who picks his shots and stays behind cover. If real war were fought like most people play CS, the USA would get our asses kicked all the time. That's my take on it anyway.

That's probably one reason. A great deal of CS players can't even dirve let alone own a firearm. :) Most people play CS as if it were WWI.

I play like I was trained as a soldier in the Army and as a Military Police officer. Pie wedge the corners, always seek good cover when possible, work as a squad unit, lay down covering fire for teammates (although that's pointless as most CS players simply charge into the firefight with little regard to dying, unlike in real life when you lay down suppressive fire with an M-60 or SAW) when they cross danger-zones and all in all, camp like a bitch and pick your shots wisely.

That's how I like to play too. When I'm at LAN parties we usually try to do that. Unfortunately it's almost impossible over the internet, and to do it right you need fair number of people. I usually don't have the most kills but I have a good frag to death ratio. :)

What pisses me off about campers (and this is the only time I use the term) is when there is a situation like 1 on 1 and both players are just sitting there waiting for each other. While 30 players watch on in boredom. Or When the bomb has been planted and the last CT's refuse to move and just sit there.

I could go on and on, but now I've got the urge to play a little CS...you bastards.

I don't like camping because it's boring. Sure it might make more sense in real life to hold back and find a nice spot, but it isn't real life.

You haven't seen boring until you've been in a 32 player game of dust where everyone camps. :)

*good* camping, as described in the original post, is fine, as long as it:

a) serves a purpose towards winning the game.
If you are a CT on a hostage map and you camp your spawn point, you are not actively working to win. All you're doing is sitting for 5 minutes, pissing everyone off, and hoping that the entire team will eventually walk into your sight. If you do it as a T after planting a bomb, or as a T near the hostages, fine.

b)it's done occasionally for a strategic purpose
if someone camps the same spot every time for 10 rounds in a row, it gets annoying. Camping is supposed to be a surprise to the enemy, not to show off that your AWP skills are better than the enemy's long range mp5 skills. I know this seems unreasonable, but it's a GAME, not real war, and should be treated as such.

i think there is a differnce from "camping" and just playing like real life. IMO! it's kewl if your sniping to sit there a while, but if nothing is going on, find a little more action. playing safe and getting in corners isn't camping, it's playing smart. what i hate, is like when 1 on 1 and people will just sit there and not move. soooo boring. now thats camping.

That I agree with. I can't stand it when there is one guy left on each team and they both camp. Or when CTs camp on hostage maps and Ts on bomb maps. It just pisses people off and waists time.

I could care less if you camp spots that make sense, and serve a purpose to win the game.

Basically what has allready been said.. If your a T, camp the hostages, that's a GOOD thing! If you're a CT, camp the bombsites!

Just DO NOT go off into some backwards corner no one ever goes (unless looking for you) and sit there to run down the clock because you don't want your precious score to be messed up.

i.e. on Assault, idiot CT's that camp with the AWP near the end of the round on their building, get banned from my server after a warning. It serves no purpose, and just just boring.

Play the game to win, not to advance you're personal score and people won't care. Sit there and camp just to make sure you get cheap kills and you'll be hated. :)

you how what the real problem is? a camping stat freak. he would be playing camper-in-the-dark style the entire game, and brag about his 'great score'. such behaviour deserves 0 respect and is really annoying

The thing with camping is that you get some of the idiots that do NOTHING but camp. And they'll sit there all day if they have to. That's why it's annoying.

Sniping is definitely ok, but perpetual campers are just goddamn annoying.

i would have to disagree on that. if someone camps with with say an awp at the same spot every time, you know he is gonna be there so you can get yourself ready somehow. as for me i would bring my own awp and prove who the man is when it comes to awp :D what really defeats the fun of the game is behind the box oops-you-didnt-see-me type of camping, i-am-gonna-get-my-teamate-wasted-then-come-get-you-while-reloading type and finally the ones who camp behind those creats close to t spawn in de_dust (you know which one i am talkinga bout)

If you caught by that more than once you probably deserve to get killed. :)

Heh I totally agree with that. My friends and I call them "buzzard kills". I hate it when all people do is wait for their teammates to wear the opposing team down then rake in all the buzzard kills.

most people only complain when campers are holding up the game by pointlessly stupid camping.

Camping as origionaly coined was sitting by a spawn point and getting kills in quake. There is no such thing as "camping" in a team based game like CS or Tribes. It's called sniping or ambush and it has very strategic advantages.

The nice thing about the idiots that pick the same spot and do the same thing all game is that you know right where they are. I usually make a point of going and killing them every time they show up in tribes. After about 10 deaths with no kills they usually get frustrated and try something else or drop. It's funny to watch someone take 3 min to move towards a snipe position and watch them the whole time and as soon as they poke their head up to kill em.

If idiots like that are on my team I usually shoot them to give em a little warning that they are being stupid. If they are on the other team I end up with a higher score. :)

I dunno about CS, but in UT, I always play CTF on Facing Worlds, and idiots just sit there camping the whole time on the side of the tower shooting people who spawn up..

Also people who piston behind teleport points are annoying.

I hafta agree with some of the posts here against camping under most circumstances.... As in real life... you're fighting the battles for a reason... I.E. rescuing hostages or planting a bomb.. in real life... if a terrorist is holding a hostage... and you don't come after him... he's not going to go off hunting the swat team... so don't camp and wait for him.... The terrorist would patrol a reasonable perimeter around the hostage area... to try and keep the Swat teams from their operational area.

Similiarly the Counter Terrorist units would guard the known targets for the terrorists but would also patrol ahead in search of the terrorists... and the terrorists certainly wouldnt camp away from the bomb site... they are conducting an attack... duh!

furthermore.. camping is damn boring... it slows the game to a crawl... once you're dead you hafta sit and watch for 20 friggin minutes while your teamate searches every inch of the map for the lame ass camper hiding in some obscure corner.

The problem with camping is that it often culminates in having two players left alive, one on each side, who refuse to leave their beloved spots, and force everyone else to sit and wait. This is often compunded by the fact that neither of those two players is particularly good. When a match has a timelimit of 5 minutes, and everyone but the two are dead after a minute and 30 seconds (which is often the case), it can be very frustrating.
