Subway tastes awfully corporate/bland to me. Even with pepper oregano etc they are just meh.

My favorite is Quiznos, but they're usually most expensive. Mr goodcents is good much better than subway.

absolutely cannot stand schlotzkys or whatever. Nasty bread.

Any Jimmy Johns...........oh god.............hipster crap.

don't have any good local places afaik
we have this thing called jasons deli but theyre national for all i know, and they're hipster crap too.

hipster = overpriced for what you get and people go there just cause they're so health conscious and cool and blah blah

What? A jj ham sammich is 5 bucks and the tastiest thing ever!
potbelly is pretty good too.

it was the one in harvard square in cambridge ma. maybe youre right that the bacon was precooked and they just reheated in the microwave but it just wasnt precooked enough. are you in subway management or something/did i just get someone in trouble?

lol, no. Though I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express a couple weeks ago:)

Due to my work, I recognize the vagaries of memory and how biased it can be based on the present state of the person, by including details you are forced to be more accurate compared to making just generalized statements. How many of these "corner delis" do you think actually have double the meat and cheese of a better quality for the same price compared to Subway? Some probably do, but many are probably just projections of us wanting to have a locally owned deli be that much better than a faceless corporation.

Fixed.

Also, JJ isn't the best thing on earth but way better than Subway etc. At least the sandwiches come with a reasonable amount of meat. The Gargantuan is a pretty good deal.

Subway is actually MUCH cheaper than the local sub shops around me. The local shops are great, but you pay for them. Sometimes, especially during $5 footlong sales I'll go just to save the extra $5.

It's rare that I come out of a local sub shop with just a snapple and a 12" sub without spending over $10.

yup, there is a local sub shop across the street from my office along with a subway and quiznos. the local sub shop makes a KILLER Italian sub that i truly love but its a $10.00+ lunch and i just cant do that very often. with subway the footlong spicy italian with a drink is $5.35.

Funny... I need to do a price compare as I too was lured back into the "OCTOBER 5 DOLLAR ANYTHING SALE"...

I added a large drink and a bag of chips. And walked out of there close to 8 bucks more poor. Need to chart a KICK ASS Roast Beef SAMMY with lettuce and tomato and mayo and S&P with a small chips and a bottled soda... I know my local deli (Where I live ergo why I have never done it as I seldom eat lunch on the W/E) does a daily sammy. 5.99 gt a hero, a quarter pound of mac or potato salad. Whats a bottle of Sodie pop go for? 2 bucks? And I think Thursday is RB day.....

OK, need to go home for lunch next Thursday.

Hmmmmmm OP may have wisdom here.

I don't know--JJ is the blandest, most useless sandwich shop I have ever been to--and I went there several times while in Chicago. I think they're bread is preposterously overrated.

Potbelly is the absolute best chain sandwich shop, of course. there is no substitute.

of all the chain sub/sandwich shops i would have to say Heidi's is the best. the Hells kitchen on Ciabatta is pretty fricking tasty. but again its a $10.00 lunch combo.

I don't believe I've ever seen/heard of Potbelly. Will keep an eye out next time I travel. Options are few around here for sandwich shops.

I'd tend to agree about JJ's bread, though. That's probably the worst part about it.

They are mostly midwest--and all over Chicago. If you are ever flying in and out of Chicago, there is one in Midway airport at the end of the main terminal.

that makes Midway the greatest airport anywhere.

Do they really differ that much on the amount of meat? I think a lot of it is just perception due to the smaller size of the bread at JJ, it's both shorter and skinnier. Granted there are subs like the Gargantuan that are clearly bigger (and more expensive), but if you are just looking around the $5 price point I don't know. If you just go by what's on their nutrition information they are pretty similar (I know they aren't always accurate, but barring getting one of each and weighing them it's as close as you can get objectively).

Take for instance a footlong black forest ham from Subway ($5) vs a Pepe from Jimmy Johns ($4.75). Subway claims to use 57g of ham per 6", so that's 114g total while a Pepe has 59g total. Like I said, not sure how accurate it is, but it seems like at least on paper Subway has more meat for the price.

http://www.subway.com/Nutrition/Files/NutritionValues.pdf
http://www.jimmyjohns.com/menu/nutrition.aspx (you have to look up a sub, then remove all the ingredients but the meat)

$5.35, you must be getting water as your drink. Yea there are better places than subway and most add more meat but since I'm trying to stay below 200lbs more meat is not necessarily a good thing and for $5 for any footlong during October it is a bargain and healthier than a big Mac combo, I'll get one one the way home and split it with the wife, drink my own soda, not bad at all IMO..

I've never seen anyone in my life so obsessed with food. Every single food thread on this website is guaranteed to have you involved correcting everyone else on how they should eat. Take a step back, it's food, it ends up coming out of your ass.

Back on topic, it's funny reading a thread by someone who works in or near NYC wondering why everyone else who doesn't live or work anywhere near NYC can't do the same as he does for lunch, that makes total sense.

Hmm, I can be at a Subway in under two minutes, get a 12" Italian BMT with lettuce, black olives, pickles, bell peppers and italian dressing for $6.50, and be back home in another two minutes, or I can drive down town, getting stuck in traffic, caught at every light, waste 20 minutes or more each way, and pay $10-12 for something I don't even want (because the local deli place doesn't have an Italian BMT equivalent).

Yeah, makes sense.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that 9 grain honey oat bread. What can the local place offer me? Wheat, white, sourdough and rye? Pffft.

the same reasons anybody goes to any other restaurant managed by corporate memo.
