So I can basically sum up what everyone who is arguing for Subway are saying, and this applies across all markets: Branding.

I guess it really is important.

You are actually just an idiot if you get deli subs from subway. The fun stuff like sweet onion teriyaki and even the meatball is good to get from there but people that literally get a turkey and cheese are just embarrassing themselves.

Even if they gave you a decent amount of meat (which they don't), the quality is super questionable. The bread also pales in comparison to any normal pizza/sub place.

So yeah, low class, uncultured, you name it... call me a snob but its really not that hard to understand the difference between a decent sub and a shitty one. Same exact thing goes for domino's.

Because people are brainwashed by commercials into ordering inferior food, but refuse to admit it. :p

I've yet to get a "good" sub from subway. They're all tolerable though. Oh, and what kind of idiot thinks the mayo goes between the meat and lettuce?! It goes on the roll.

I go because I love the taste, it's healthy, cheap, easy. I love the tuna, the black forest ham, chicken teriyaki. I put a ton of veggies on em. Have you seen what olives cost? For $5 I get a footlong filled with olives, spinach, lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, onions, bell peppers. I doubt I could buy the stuff myself and make it any cheaper.

Subway has been a good staple of my diet for many years. I'm in great shape too.

but that's obviously turkey, or maybe ham, in that picture that you showed.

no.. that's black angus steak shaved into a slice.

don't let your ignorance interfere with your enjoyment of a good sandwich.

Come down to my area.
Not a deli within 30 miles, and they are mediocre at best.
Subway has a couple of sandwiches I "like", on the rare occasion I eat out, I sometimes pick Subway.
Same for Chain Pizza (We have only Godfathers in this community), the other chains are all that's available, so when I want pizza, I am limited on what I can get.

To be fair, the picture you've posted does not look like the meat in the Quiznos ad.

Anyhow, as far as Subway; it's the branding/consistency that gets imprinted in our brains. Say I was on the road and wanted to stop by to get a grab to eat; I'm in the midwest which means oftentimes it's vast stretches of emptiness dotted w/ small towns every 100 miles; would I want to go eat at "Mom's", an unknown quantity, or (admitting that it's bland, not "good" per se) somewhere at least the quality is consistent?

I do know that when the wife and I were overseas for a job we'd frequent the McD's every so often because it was fairly accessible, we knew the quality of the food and more importantly it was comfort food for my wife and I.

Other than that - yes, I do admit that I get a craving for junk food like McD's but having said that - I am on the same boat as the OP: if I am a local and know the area, there's no way for me to justify eating at a chain like Subway on a regular basis.

that looks like mid-grade roast beef.

the photo you posted--based on texture more than anything, looks like Carl Buddig-quality turkey/ham. The texture is all wrong.

...it looks like some sort of paste-based product, molded to look like food.

actually, it probably is. very rarely will you see food in advertising that is actually real food.

if they have any other local option?

this is something that has always confused the fuck out of me... is it just because it's a known quantity, that you can go to any Subway in the world and get the exact same 3 slices of meat and mediocre bread?

I work across the street from one and I'm always baffled that it's packed during lunch time because you can walk a block further and go to a local pizza shop that makes their own (amazing) bread from scratch every day and piles on the meat on your sandwich. it may be $1.50 more than a Subway $5 footlong, but you're easily getting at least 3 times the meat/cheese if not more.

probably answers your question there. Maybe people don't know about the other place or don't like it?

it looks like there is another kind of meat, turkey, in that pic with the beef. if it's not turkey, wtf is it? Doesn't look like the other onions or mushrooms, so it can't be that.

oh, I guess it might be the mozzarella?

Some of us don't need 3 times the meat/cheese like you fat people.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Why would I pay $1.50 for the opportunity to overeat? The portions are acceptable at Subway, the price is 20% lower and apparently half the calories. Sounds like a winning strategy to me.

obviously it depends on what you're eating, but for most sandwiches, the meat and veggies are the healthy part. the vast majority of the calories are going to come from the bread, mayo-based sauces, and cheese.

a 6" sub from my local deli is easily two meals for me; a sub from subway, one.

Why I go to Subway:

1. It's very nutritious with a variety of veggies. You get to squirt omega 3s onto your sammich with the tasty oil they have. Their sandwiches offer a good ratio of all of the food groups, unlike many other places that shy away from veggies, or whole grains. Subway is one of the few fast food places that makes me feel really good after a meal.

2. It's tasty: they have a wide variety of ingredients for me to build a tasty sammich.(6 kinds of breads, like 8 sauces, and garden variety of veggies, many kinds of meats, marinara sauce)

3. It's a helluva deal. I can guarantee you can't build a subway $5 footlong for $5 by buying ingredients from the supermarket. If you do, you'd have to buy in bulk and you'd have to eat sammiches for several months straight just to break even.

4. Local options here in SoCal sucks... most places only have one or two types of breads that are very plain, not some 9 grain honey oat or some italian herbs and cheese bread. Their sauce options consists of mustard and mayo. They have one of the widest variety of veggies to choose from. Most places I've been to only has lettuce and tomato, and maybe one or two more choices at most.
