If I want a sandwich I make one. Considering my sub shop options are Subway (nasty and smelly), Jimmy Johns (not smelly but really nasty), and Port of Subs (extremely nasty and horrifically smelly) Subway is the lesser of three evils.

Yup, and people wonder why they're overweight. "But I only paid $.40 extra for the Biggie size fries every day this week!". That sht adds up, monetarily and fattitarily.
a 6" sub with double the amount of turkey is going to be healthier than the same amount of meat spread over a 12" roll.

protein is really the only think that seems to keep me feeling full for a long period of time, so I'm a big fan of the meat

it probably doesn't apply if you're eating really fatty/processed meat, but if you're eating a turkey sub or something, the meat isn't what's making you fat.

I like subway. It tastes good, fills me up, is pretty good for me, and is inexpensive. I don't see why anyone would avoid it.

Subway's advantages are:
1. Cheap
2. Fast
3. Consistent

For many people, that's enough.

There's a Subway about 10 minutes from work. In that same area are 4 local shops that also sell subs, so the travel time is essentially the same. People could call ahead to the local shops to have the subs ready when they got there, which would cancel out Subway's speed advantage. But they don't, and they go to Subway because it's a 5 minute transaction instead of a 15-20 minute one at the local shops (when not ordered ahead) at lunchtime.

One co-worker in particular will never call ahead to pickup because he had 3 wrong orders (different places) in a month, and of course didn't know until he drove back to work to eat. He will only order once he gets there.

cause it's right there, fairly decent price and depending on who's making it, hit or miss

B/c people are too lazy to try and find something better/cheaper.

Local italian place near will make you a huge 14" long and 5" tall chicken parm sub for $7. Probably the equivalent of two subway foot longs at a minimum.

if they have any other local option?

this is something that has always confused the fuck out of me... is it just because it's a known quantity, that you can go to any Subway in the world and get the exact same 3 slices of meat and mediocre bread?

I work across the street from one and I'm always baffled that it's packed during lunch time because you can walk a block further and go to a local pizza shop that makes their own (amazing) bread from scratch every day and piles on the meat on your sandwich. it may be $1.50 more than a Subway $5 footlong, but you're easily getting at least 3 times the meat/cheese if not more.

1. It's 5 bucks, not $6.50 like your local store
2. Its a footlong with already too much food. I don't need 3x the cheese and meat from another place
3. Its a well known chain and I know what it will taste like
4. Its closer
5. Because I can

because it's their money and they can spend it how the fuck they want?

i've never understood the moronic tenedency on this forum to think it's their right to tell people how to spend their money.

why is there a subway thread every other fucking week? this is like the circumcision subject.

Subway is cheap, Quizno's is garbage (same damn quality as Subway, with an Apple fan's price premium), and sometimes local delis really aren't that great for the price.

this is not difficult

What most other sensible people are saying... subway is cheap, a known quantity, and much better for you (given what you order) than McD/BK/other fast food options.

From my experience, Subways in my area are generally kept up pretty well. Veggies are fresh, etc.

I have a bad experience there from time to time (usually related to older bread), but nothing that is ever OMG terrible. And for $5 to split a sub with the wife, it make a good cheap lunch if we don't get the time to make our own.

I like Subway when I want a Subway sub. They're different than real sub shop subs, and that isn't a bad thing, just different. People get confused by linking items that are superficially the same, but are really different products. Subway makes Subway subs, real shops make real subs. They aren't interchangeable. Take it for what it is; or not. Just don't link them together.

There's a local lunch place here that has great Vietnamese subs that are about the same price as Subway, or even a little cheaper. I go there whenever I am in the area, but it isn't close enough for me to walk to.

It's a cheap and quick bite to eat and there's a location that is close to where I work. I only go there about once a month.

when i go to subway it's because i'm thinking "i want a meatball marinara" not because i'm thinking "i want to go to subway".

It's because you know what you are going to get. I have a ton of food places around me but haven't had the time or energy to really get into it. I end up just picking Jack in the Box, Subway, Taco Bell, etc. b/c they are affordable, easy, and consistent.

If I find a small mom and pop place that is similarly priced I will go to that though.

Subway is awful, but I went there for a cup with a UC3 MP code on it. I ended up dumping the drink out, even that was bad. Togo's is much better, but nothing like a real deli.

So Cal guy here. I've tried many many local delis. Subway is one of the best out of all of them, and it's cheaper. I don't get the whole low quality thing, subway has WAAAY more choices of bread than most places. Most places only offer white or wheat at most, not to mention their choice of veggies and sauces FAR overshadow most places.

And the amount of meat you get is decent as long as you don't buy the cheapest sub they offer.
