why do people go out of their way to do things wrong?

boggles my mind. we've got an automatic deployment server setup to do windows installs at work. when you run a job to install a specific OS, it brings up a menu of different options. all the options are defaulted to the standard settings that we use for 99.9% of installs (the only time we don't use the defaults is if a client requests something specifically, like a different partitioning scheme or additional software). so it boggles my mind that someone would go out of their way and change the default options on a dozen different installs for absolutely no reason

sorry, had to vent... I've got a long day ahead of me re-installing servers that someone else screwed up. lol.

EDIT: Nick Burns ... Your company's computer guy!

:D I'm not really short tempered, it just bugs me when I've got to redo something because someone went out of their way to do something wrong, when they should really know better.

if it was a matter of having to fill in all the information manually or do a cd install, that'd be one thing, but the person had to actually go out of their way to change a default option to screw this up :p

haha... Sorry I just always think about that when one of these IT threads start up. I can understand your frustration... I tried to fix my grandparents computer once... that was bad. I could only imagine dealing with a company of only partially computer literate people who fudge up little things that you spent a considerable time on to make easy to use and not screw-up-able.

You've never met an IT guy who hasn't had to deal with witless mouth-breathing simpletons and their boneheaded mistakes on a regular basis.

:D

I'm not short tempered.

Edit: I don't really deal with other people's mistakes though.

Are you including programmers in this umbrella?

I've never met a programmer before. I was referring to the company's "IT guy(s)".

So what you are saying is that the standard settings suck, but you use them anyways?

no... why on earth would you want your OS, programs, logs, etc all on the same partition?

I've never understood partitioning a single drive on a server. It doesn't increase performance. It doesn't even increase usability, because you have to remember which logical drive certain things were put on. It also screws you if you have 3rd party apps to install which were written (for some reason) to only read from the C: drive, but you have the drive partitioned with very little free space.
