Why do people get so excited about watching other people play games?

I might watch a basketball game for about 10 minutes but after that it becomes a real snoozer.

Sometimes we enjoy watching our team win. It is mostly only interesting when the score/outcome is extremely close.

But it is not your team. It is a team owned by some guy that pays people to move to the state you live in and play games.

Do any of you guys that hate watching sports actually ever play any sports? I played football in high school (starter for 4 years baby! :)) and I can't get enough pro and college football. I will watch any sport that I play for fun, such as baseball, basketball, bowling, soccer, volleyball, etc. Maybe there's just something wrong with me though? Who knows for sure...

It's about the only thing on TV where you don't know the ending in advance. The good guys don't always win. There's excitement and suspense.

I admire a good athlete, and teams working together just get me hyper for some reason.

[sarcasm] Yes we know this. [/sarcasm]

For me it's the competition. I love playing sports, and watching is another way to experience it. It's kind of like reading a book about a country you want to go to but can't. And since I can't play sports professionally, I tend to watch the best of the best play each other.

i think it helps to have actually played the sport at some point so you can appreciate the subtleties of the game.

Agree totally. Hockey, OTOH, is a totally different situation. Specifically if the Canucks are playing!! ;) :)

Even when I'm alone, I am all pumped up when the Caps score a goal that matters in a game. I guess I'm a true fan(atic). Hey, they're in last place, and I still care. Doesn't that mean anything ? :D
