Why do people get so angry when you cut them off.

Granted I'll get flamed for this, but...

I don't understand how people get so pissed that they want to fight you.
I get cut off all the time.. (e.g. people trying to get in a turn lane at the last possible second, people trying to get out of a merge lane from behind you, etc.)
It doesn't even bother me unless the driver almost causes a wreck. Even then I wouldn't want to beat up the person or cut their tires or something crazy.
The best is when someone engages in a shouting match, like its going to do anything other than enrage them more...
I kinda look at traffic like this big, crappy game.. I think people take driving too seriously.

Anyway, poll included.

I see no poll, and deem your thread ghey. You cut me off and I'll cut you.

People who suck at driving suck at life, and thus should not be allowed to have either.

I don't really get cut off because I'm usually the aggressive driver, but in the case that when some people are coming up fast on my rear/side view mirrors, I fully expect it. I get angry in any case simply when people don't use their turn signals. Damn drivers with attitude.

I bitch to the fiancee but otherwise I don't really care. I don't seek revenge or anything.

I also don't get why people get so pissed off when you honk your horn. I'm trying to get your attention for a reason - so we don't crash into each other. Don't take it personally.

What bothers one may not bother another. It makes me mad but I rarely honk at anyone, just give a few "gestures"

My initial reaction is to get pissed, but if I see that the driver was trying to avoid another car, or absolutely had to come over (which technically is hardly ever the case, since they SHOULD have been planning ahead), then I usually won't mind. The only time I'll give the finger is if someone is tailgating me, then speeds by, and then proceeds to cut me off. That's when I go "Mad Max," flash them a few times with my brights, tailgate them in return, and give them the finger.

No, it's not safe, but it's quite good at relieving stress. I hate the drivers in this state.

Because everyone knows that when they go home after cutting you off, they'll go post on some random BBS somewhere about why it pisses other people off and not use correct punctuation.

It upsets me when someone else endangers my life through their own careless disregard :|

Heh, thats not Mad Max... I mean people that will follow you to cuss you out and/or try to get out of their cars and fight you.

What doesn't make sense to me is 'returning the favor' to people who cut you off... Seems like a pretty childish exchange, not to mention its breaking the law and just creating more danger for the other motorists, without solving anything.

depends on my mood that day. I never try to get into a fight over it. I either get mad, flip them off, yell at them (from within my car, they can't hear me) or other gestures. Or I just let it go and say "A-Hole" under my breath. It also depends on the situation. If it is a person who obviously doesn't know exactly where they are going and have to sort of cut me off to get their exit, then I don't mind. However if it is some bastard in a little BMW or something like that who is obviously cutting in and out of the lanes to try and get ahead then it really pisses me off and I purposely block their path with my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville (commuter vehicle). They usually don't want to get into a fender bender with a car that is worth about as much as their front bumber.

why don't you stop being an asshat and move into the center lane if you're going so slow?

I'm not necessarily talking about life-threatening maneuvers. Someone cutting in front of you when you are both going 10 miles an hour isn't going to hurt anyone. Sure, it's rude and annoying, but you'd have to be not paying attention for there to be an accident.

Its easy for people to think their vehicle is their castle, there's power and independence. Its gotten a lot worse abusing red lights, U-turns etc.. I can get pissed, but usually stay focused and drive defensive, its just not worth it to take personal.

I just have to tell this story about driving and anger...

I was coming into an open parking lot to serve jury duty at the county court... the rows are each one-way only with arrows on the ground... diagonal parking spaces... hence the one-way rows. Parking is always scarce the later you get there so I thought I had to jump in there and find a spot quick. (turns out 815am is still real early so there are lots of spaces)

I complete a right turn into a row that goes the opposite direction and this car was sitting there in the middle of the row. I stop my progress and try to let him go through as he was obviously getting ready to leave. He mouths "asshole" at me from about 4 car lengths away. I'm still stopped. As he passes me (plenty of space for 2 cars to pass), I mouth FVCK YOU with the meanest look possible and stare right at him. I continue into one of the many vacant spots.

He throws his car in reverse and pulls up next to me. I roll down my window and begin to entertain him. He asks what I just said to him. I told him I left plenty of room for him to leave and even stopped for him to do so. I knew I was wrong for going in the wrong way but there were no cars around and that's why I did it... of course it doesn't make it right... but the thing that got me the most was him mouthing "asshole" at me. I tell him that's why I cussed him out too... and he denies saying asshole... he says he was saying to me "you're going the wrong way"... yeah ok buddy... with 1 word ? In the end, he leaves pretty pissed that I wasn't backing down and says "I hope you have a good day". I said the same right back to him with the biggest smile on my face... and continued to eat my sausage mcmuffin. I thought for sure he was going to come back and key my car or something, but it turned out he never did. There was a chance he was a lawyer or even an off-duty cop in his Beemer... who knows...

Some people...

Slow? I find it amusing that you make that judgment without knowing exactly how fast I drive OR what lane I'm in when these people are passing me. I'm sorry, but if you're doing 95+ in a 65 zone on the freeway here, I'm not getting out of your way so that you can pass me. Beyond that, I'm reasonable, but if you flash me with your highbeams then it's on.

As far as why people retaliate...I know that I do it because I'm pissed, and it helps me feel better. It hardly ever happens, and it's stupid to do, but hey, at least I'm honest about it.
