We have a yearly national convention with thousands of attendees. I used to go onsite and be the IT manager for this convention (it really sucked).

3 or 4 years ago, our president's secretary showed up and realized she had forgotten her laptop (hundreds of miles away). Let me repeat -- this is a ONCE A YEAR convention that lasts 4 or 5 DAYS and has THOUSANDS of attendees. How the fuck do you forget your primary tool for performing your work and performing the president's calendar management, etc. in the BIGGEST DAMN MEETING OF THE YEAR???

was she blond?

It's not so much that they forgot - I've done that too. Its all the bitching and moaning they do when I tell them that they'll need to go get it that I hate

Yeah that would piss me off too. You screw up you just need to accept it and move on, bitching to the people telling you what you need to do when you screw up accomplishes nothing.

I've never forgotten my laptop. In fact when I walk out the door anymore without a backpack on I feel naked I've carried one for so long.

Should I ever forget my laptop though I would either take the day off or just go home and work from home that day.

If it happened to one of my employees I would just ask if they wanted to just take the day off and go enjoy the day. Simple solution, you have vacation time so use it.

you guys really nit pick over making up time like that? lame.
Didn't we just have a thread about this? Like last week? A civil engineer was fired because he would go away for a couple hours but still write it on his time sheet as time worked?

Arguably that civil engineer who got fired was less wrong. Getting your work done in 6 hours then screwing around for 2 hours and charging it as 8 hours is a LOT better than forgetting your laptop at home and doing literally no work for 8 hours and still charging it as 8 hours of time worked.

I once checked what AutoCAD and Microstation cost. Freaking $5,000 each and my computer has both. It also has Windows and Office and Adobe PDF Standard. This computer probably cost $20,000 just for the software. It's not something the company would like to have a backup image of. It would be cheaper to send the guy home and pay him for his time driving back to get his computer.

Laughing at the fools who think just virtualize everything. That would never work at my company. We have 50,000+ employees with over 75,000+ assets across the US. The cost to over hull our system to be virtual would cost 100's of million dollars.

We were around since the 60's and have older systems that work just fine. Virtualize might be the best way to do things today but it is not the most cost effect considering what would need to be done update the infrastructure for bandwith, servers and 75,000 PC/laptops.

Getting back to the forgot laptop oh fucking well

for those people saying its not a BFG, would you want to pay your lawn service people if they showed up without their lawnmower?

NO BIG DEAL! I've got one you can borrow!

So what you're saying is that you would hire a lawn maintenance crew to cut your lawn but you would still buy a lawn mower just in case they forget theirs? That's messed up.

Say they can borrow the new iPaper you're currently testing and hand out a pencil and a paper.

Eh? How do you virtualize the programs I mentioned without purchasing another license?

Easy, a virtualized application does not require another license because it is not running in more than 1 location at a time, therefore only 1 license is required.

Yes but then there is the virtualized application license AND the local license. Yes I know we could completely virtualzie everything and have the people on laptops remote in from home to use them but christ people, we are not going to set that up because people forget their laptops

Have you ran these high end programs using virtualization?
Some are horrible.
Plus, some like Pro/E have customized build files and templates needed during install. And every dept can be different.

If someone forgets his laptop... tell him to go get it, or have it brought to him. Yes, it's logical that he would need to make up for the time not being productive. Be considerate... let him make up the time anytime in the near future, it doesn't need to be the same day. It *really* shouldn't be nearly as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

And no, I've never forgotten my laptop, not even once. I've forgotten my wallet, but never my laptop.

Then you do not know how to think ahead towards the future. With virtualized apps you life gets much easier. No more conflicts. With APPV/Thinapp the packages can be cached for offline access.

I have forgotten mine a time or two but I take it home so infrequently that it just doesn't cross my mind when I'm heading out in the morning.

Let's be honest here, are all of you batting 1.000 when it comes to remembering your wallet every time you head to work? And that's something you haul around all the time, work or no work.

And as for making up time lost to go home and get the forgotten laptop? No, I do not agree with that. The very nature of the idea that the employee has taken the laptop home already tells me they put in extra time.

I do the 3 part pat before I leave for work. Left front pocket is my work cell phone, right front pocket are my keys, back right pocket is my wallet.

I forgot my work laptop yesterday. It's been so long since I forgot it I was scared I left it on my truck's roof.

My laptop isn't required for work as I have a desktop too. I use it for troubleshooting problems in the building or meetings.

I have been taking a laptop to and from work every day for about 10 years.

I forgot it once (and, because I was in an arbitration at the time, my wife had to bring it to me).

Once, Johnny.

I've never forgot my wallet or my keys. My door locks when it is closed so forgetting my keys means I can lock myself out of the house. Forgetting my wallet means I can't ride the bus. My garage is locked too, so forgetting both of them would mean I sleep under a tree for about 10 hours until the gf comes home to open the door for me.

I can understand forgetting a laptop if it's not something you carry every day and only take home once in a while.
