Why do people find it so easy to be abusive on the internet?

Was just thinking about this while looking on the messageboards and from previous experience with the internet. There seem to be quite a few people incapable of arguing or posting without being really abusive, such as telling people to STFU etc. If you met someone face to face and they talked to you like some of the people do in here surely there would be some kind of physical confrontation, I mean if I was trying to argue politely and someone kept telling me to STFU or stuff to that effect I know I'd start to get more than a little angry...

So is it because people find it safe to hide behind their computers and keyboards where no-one can reach them that encourages them to be so abusive and illogical? Or is it just their own issues surfacing here? It seems to be a trend where people on the net are becoming almost incapable of reasonable arguments without really trying to p*ss people off? I know this is by no means everyone, but Ive noticed it more and more lately and although I take it more or less with a pinch of salt it does become irritating, anyone else think so?

I'm really not sure actually, I believe it's because they are getting out the anger that the have for people in the real world but dont have the guts to say in person.

It's because unlike in real life you won't get smacked and there is no repercussion of being rude on the internet. For some it lets them act out as they wish they could in real life but don't have the guts to. For others they simply have poor manners and don't feel on the net inhibited by real life constraints.
 
Skoorb hit the nail on the head. Personally, I don't say anything here or anywhere else I post that I wouldn't say in person, my pride won't allow it. I am not a tough guy/smart-ass in real life, I will not pretend to be one on the internet.
 
I think because the internet is very 2 dimensional, its difficult to imagine sometimes that there is actually a real person behind every post.

I?m a tough guy/smart-ass in real life, but my keyboard?s a wimp 😉. This forum would have quite the different look and feel if everyone posted as if we were in a room speaking to one another face to face.

I think it would too. I, for one, know that I would be a lot nicer 🙂 I'm sure everybody else would too. Much harder to try to tell 'real' people that they're acting inappropriately.

Cuz you can't punch them in the head.

I find that most people that ARE that way on the net, whould never be that way IRL cuz they are to geeky and whimpy and would get a good ass whuping.
