Why do people encode lectures and audiobooks in stereo

I don't understand why people ever encode speech mp3s in stereo. For any given bitrate, I'd rather have the speech in mono, since that's how it was recorded in the first place. Why would you use 32kbps or even 64kbps and then split that between two channels?

As to topic. Yeah, I loathe downgraded audiobooks and shitey encoding in general. But the worst is mono that fails to output in dual-channel and so only comes from either L or R speakers.
