Why do people drink?

I have never consumed alcohol, but I am wondering what is so great about drinking?
I've been hearing from many of my friends, whom are still in high school, and their party and drinking experiences, but could not understand why they do it.

So, ATOT, why do you think that people drink, and what motivates people under age 21 to drink?
Is it peer pressure?
Anti-depressant?
...
Or does it just taste damn good?

it's fun.

edit: it's fun as long as you're not a dumbass about it (ie: binge drinking, drinking and driving, etc).

Drinking in moderation can be quite fun. Drinking to the point of not remembering what the hell you have done is stupid. I've done it once...and never again...

I didn't drink under 21.

You shouldn't either. It's bad. :|

That said, I do drink...eh...fairly regularly now. Few beers once a week or so, maybe get right smashed once a month, if that. It's a nice way to blow of stress. Which is why it's stupid for kids to do. However stressful you think high school is, college is worse. And however stressful you think college is, "real life" is MUCH worse. Starting drinking in high school is thus totally lame.

I don't see the fun in getting wasted, passing out, and waking up the next morning not remembering a thing that happened the night before. Call me a geek but going over to a friends house for poker and LANing is a lot more fun.

I don't know so much that it's "bad" per se as that it's not worth it, and it can be unwise. The younger you are, the more challenging it can be (generally speaking) to make good choices. Add alcohol into the mix and it gets harder. Plus you're still developing when you're younger, and killing brain cells at that age probably has more impact.

Going over to a friends house with a SMALL group of people for LANing, SFB, and having beer and pizza, though, is *substantially* more fun.

Drinking for the sake of drinking is stupid. However, it does lighten the mood and make something otherwise just 'fun' MORE fun.

Drinking in High school is pretty lame. The quality just sucks really. Im all for sipping on a nice Bombay Sapphire martini, or the more frequent "get home from long day" Bombay Sapphire and Tonic.

drinking is fun when you're around people that know their limits. Watching people puke is not fun. Having to take care of people is not fun. Having to drive an hour home after drinking is stupid as hell.

Basically, I dont care about underage drinking as long as the participating parties are responsible. Of course, most of them aren't, which is why we have so many problems with this.

When you're young alcohol tasted like crap but it was fun getting wasted so fast. In college, beer and alcohol starts to taste good, and you need more to get wasted.

I am approaching 22 and I still haven't had a sip. I really do not see what is so great about drinking when most of my friend in college drink just to get drunk. I think for the most part to my not wanting to drink is after I read the article about Jacqui SaburidoJacqui Saburido, and it depresses me to realize how irresponsible many people can be.

But I would understand if people drink because they are stressed out, since I almost considered turning to alcohol when I found out I earned a D in one of my classes this past semester.

nothing wrong with drinking in moderation, even when underage

21 is just a number

drinking is fun, the effects of the alcohol feel good and it livens social situations

be smart and make good decisions, just like with everything else in life you do

I hate getting drunk and waking up with a hangover
but i do like getting a bit tipsy and feeling good.

I also loosen up a lot when I consume alcohol so it makes it 10 times easier to have a girl on my lap and chat or whatever

absolutely nothing

<-- doesn't drink

IMHO it's dumb..considering it does more brain damage to you than a lot of other drugs (no, i don't do any drugs either) ;)

it was helpful in making me less uptight, which allowed me to be more social. I used to be very quiet, but after a couple of talkative nights thanks to alcohol, I became a much more social person.

It helped me, but i think i'm in the minority on that one

I use dto think the same thing, until the first time I hung out with a bunch of friends and got a little schnockered - I had a great time, really lowers your inhibitions, which is a good thing for someone who isn't a partier :p
