Four killed in job agency shooting
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (CNN) -- Police had an apartment building surrounded Tuesday where a man suspected of killing four people and wounding a fifth was holed up, police said.
The shooting took place at 6:30 a.m. (7:30 a.m. ET) at Labor Ready Inc., a temporary employment agency near downtown Huntsville, police said.
Three people died at the scene and a 55-year-old victim died on the operating table at Huntsville Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Terri Bryson told CNN.
A 46-year-old man shot in the leg was treated and released, Bryson said.
Police said the shooting followed a fight over a CD player between two groups of men at the agency's front counter, where 10 to 15 people were assembled for work assignments, The Huntsville Times reported.
When the suspect was hit in the face, he pulled a pistol and started shooting, witness Patricia Johnson told the Times.
Johnson, 38, said the man pointed the pistol at her and pulled the trigger but nothing happened. She then ran to a closet where three or four other people were hiding, she said.
Police spokesman Wendell Johnson told The Associated Press the suspect was well known at the agency. "People who know him say is a very unstable individual," Johnson said.
According to police, the suspect left the agency and went to his apartment building, where a standoff ensued after at least one shot was fired as officers arrived, the AP reported.
Labor Ready, based in Tacoma, Washington, describes itself as the "nation's leading provider of temporary manual labor to the light industrial and small business markets."
The Huntsville office is next door to a building housing the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Madison County sheriff's investigators and state troopers, according to the Huntsville paper.
