I've always wondered this, but why do some people cut the dogs tail or ears for certain breeds.

Is there a reason for that?

Because if god has intended for those animals to have ears and tails he would have given them to them...oh wait.

actually i have an Australian Shepherd, bred for cattle and sheep herding. their tails are docked, supposedly to prevent injury from the cattle or sheep from stepping on the tail.

To make them look menacing. These are the same people who voted "I'd rather be mean" in the recent poll

So they sever a limb... because otherwise it might get damaged? :p

Aesthetics purely IMO. My dog has a docked tail ... but we adopted him from the rescue society that way. He was abandoned behind a hardware store in -20 degrees celcius with 5 of his litter mates, also with docked tails. My question is, why would anyone dock these puppy's tails if they were going to abandon them anyway.

Edit: Ace as a puppy

Just for looks.

Although I guess it could be argued that it's just because some people are sick bastards that want to cause unessessary pain to innocent creatures in an attempt to gain stature in our materialistic society.

maybe theyre like one of our dogs, and the tail is just the right height to slap you in the nuts when he wags it.

Maybe because if a sheep stepped on the dog, the dog would bite the sheep?

Same here. I forget the percentage, but some are born without tails. Mine was.

I've had several Boxers. They are so happy a long tail would be like a whip to anything near it. Plus it reduces the height that they can jump as it's used for balance. Check out slow-mo
video of big cats running, they really use the tail for balance. I'm glad my happy Boxer has a docked tail.

Ear clipping is another matter, I do not care for it a-tall and none of my dogs has had this done to them. On a Boxer, Great Dane and several others this proceedure calls for "a very long cut". It's hard on the animal, risk of infection and a long healing time.

Owners of fighting dogs Pits and alot of others that I can't recall will have severly cilpped ears. This is done to keep blood out of their eyes in the event of injury. Thick blod will cause a temorary loss of vision and a lost match. Grim but true.

I hate even thinking about fighting dogs for sport but the gang-bangers do it.
