Why do people come to America if they don't like Americans?

They come to see the Grand Canyon and got upset their view is blocked by a grand american ass.

Try this viewpoint:
You come from a place where you to work very hard to get little in return. Then, you come to America and see how much nicer and easier life is in here. What would you think when you see a lazy, fat-ass Americans eating half-pounder burger at Hardees with supersized fries and diet soda (hey, they try to lose weight, too)?

I think that it depends and there has to be a balance....I can see where both you and the DJ is comming from as people rarely hear about those who are "balanced" but rather the extreme examples....I have nothing against parents who want to encourage their children to do well academically, however I detest the parents who push their children so far that it socially cripples them later in life...kids should have a childhood to remember fondly but should also be encouraged to succeed.

oh i agree completely that a parent needs to maintain the balance. all work and no play is no fun for the child either. but if your kid shows signs of being smart at a young age, wouldnt you challenge him with more mature ways of thinking? im not talking about buying him books on physics/chemistry...im talking about developing his mind. i think if my kid is willing, or showing signs that he might be able to handle more, i'll tip the balance a little bit in favor of work over play. wouldnt you?

it seemed to me that the DJ would completely ignore that and wouldnt challenge his child at all

Yes, as are the majority of human beings. Unfortunately we've just had the stereotype attached to us.

My parents travel to Europe every year and from what they tell me there are very few fat people. Also, Europeans can speak 3-4 different languages and they excel academically. I understand though that Europen countries are so close to each other so you need to learn other languages to effectiviely communicate on a daily basis. We on the other hand may never come in contact with a Canadian or Mexican individual.

True,

I live in the south and I'm still 800 miles from Mexico!
But if you haven't noticed, Mexico and Canada are creeping
towards the middle of the US on a daily basis and it may not
be too long before we will have to know French and Spanish to
communicate with those around us.

P.S.
It's always easier to put others down (as in the case of what these
boys are doing) than to build them up.

Much of Europe is facing their own obesity epidimic. It may not have reached the levels we see in the US, but if the present rate continues, it wont be long:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1358887.stm

So the myth that an obesity epidimic is unique to America can end now.

ANY society that has traded manual labor for desk jobs and has easy access to cheap, high quality (read high calorie) foods will face this problem. The combination of low activity and munching culture is not uniquely American. It is uniquely modern.

one thing i heard on the radio yesterday (NJ 101.5, Jersey Guys talk show). The host was talking about how it sickens him that parents push their kids to excel. One caller called up and said he is 13 and took the SATs and got a 1150. The host started making fun of him calling him a loser and a geek and why he's taking the SAT instead of playing PS2 or Xbox. He went on to say that he wouldnt allow his kids to take the SATs at such an young age and he'd rather let his kids be kids. That totally apalled me. Why would any parent hold their child back from reaching their full potential? What you learn at a young age sticks with you. If you teach your kids to work hard and not procrastinate, he/she will succeed. The sad part is I think most American parents agree with him in letting "kids be kids". True, there is a limit to how far you should push your child....but if your child shows any hint of good potentials, it would be a tragedy to simply ignore that

I listen to those guys as well. Craig and (I forget the italian) The show is funny but Craig is so full of it.

Anyway, I think Craig's point was that as adults we tend to forget that children should be children. We are putting all of this stress on our children. Young children need exercise and fresh air and there has to be a balance but parents are forgetting this and so they push their children to succeed.

Our society judges you by your wealth and how much success you have had in your lifetime. IMO total bulls*it, because when I die and you die none of it is going to matter. Who cares if you drove a BMW, because your not taking it with you when you pass away.

My parents have Russian teenagers that work for them and they like to talk sh*t on American people every chance they get. They have been in America for a couple of months and they have stated that we are fat! Most Americans are fat? Also, they have said that Americans are dumb and that we are spoiled. I think they are jealous because they see teens their age driving in $30,000 cars.

So are American people fat, unintelligent and spoiled?

😀

uhhh the obesity is pretty rampant in the US... at least that's got some factual basis. As for the rest, im sure they are basing the intelligence argument on the image of public school 😉. Americans as a demographic should have the same intelligence as the rest of the world

As you point out yourself, multi-lingualism is a necessity for Europeans in a way that it will never be for Americans. I've met plenty of Canadians in my life, Canadians speak English, it's on the the Francophones from Qubec that insist on French and they are definitely a minority among Canadians.

Regarding excelling academically, it should be noted that in many European countries, the students who are unsuited to college and the like are sent to trade schools and the culture is supportive of this instead of looking slightly down on it. This has a couple of benefits, it artificially inflates academic performance figured since they are eliminating the lower percentiles from their college statistics and the like, and it also priases people for performing to the best of their ability and doing useful work. I think it's a good system, but I also think that it makes comparing Europe to America academically very difficult since in America even the lower percentiles of the population are put on the "college track".

welll not that I agree with their line of thinking

But 1 out of 3 in America is obese, American as a whole is NOT fat, a lot of people are though,

Because I hate the Brittish more, and I have a better life over here. I don't dislike all Americans, just the rednecks, teenagers, and "thugs"...which I hear everyone hates anyway. 🙂

Everyone talks about Developing someone's mind but you must not forget about developing their social skills. And "playing and being a kid" is how you learn to deal with other people. Too many of these child prodigies turn out arrogant and don't have the skills to handle people in everyday forms of life.

I would much rather have incredible social skills and lower grades / test scores than the vice versa.

It's a shame they can't put a measure on social skills.
