Why do people charge a premium for used stuff?

I've been wondering this for the longest time, playing in FS/FT and egay and stuff...

Why do people charge a premium for something they cannot guarantee? My favorite thing is overclocking. You get posts like:

"OMGWTFBBQz i gotz this BRAND NEW (lie) A64 3000+ steppng ABCD1234 that i overclokd to 807x34 (whatever...). Used it only for 6.825hrs to test it (then why did you buy it if you don't need it?). i want $200  for it because it's brand new and overclocks like a biznatch"

Now really? What is the etiquette behind this? Someone bought something for ~$130, slapped it in their system, did who knows what to it, probably voided the warranty, cannot guarantee that it will run as advertised in YOUR system, and wants to charge a premium for it?

I know it's capitalism at it's finest, but as bad as it is, my bigger question is why are there people out there that actually fall for this?

Oh well. It's too early in the morning for me I guess.

because there is always someone stupid enough to pay for it

hell i sold a pair of BROKEN Klipsch promedia 2.1s on ebay for 120$

People haven't paid a premium for used computer parts in a while. The problem nowadays is that yields are much more "hit" than "miss", and good overclocking CPUs are dirt cheap to begin with.

I remember back in 99/00, there was quite a lot of business for pre-overclocked CPUs that people paid a premium for. Compuwiz was one notable FS/FT'er who did quite a bit of business, but there were others.

Celeron 366 @ 550 on an ABIT BP6...the good old days.

I would never rip people off like that... i gave away 4-5 gigs of rdram which are quite expensive to a bunch of people here.. i mean most of them were 128mb x4 but some people still can't afford that and I find it bad to rip off people.

people on anand FS/T charge way too much for their used stuff. i've seen people who try to charge the same amount for a used video card as you can get it for new. greedy ****s.

The seller is at NO FAULT here folks. His SOLE responsibility as a seller is to get as much as he can for his item.

The fault lies with idiots who will pay that much for it.

If no one would pay it, the seller would be forced to reduce his price.

"Greed" has nothing to do with it. It is STUPID to sell an item for $4 when someone is willing to pay $6.

It's one thing to charge more if, say maybe you have replaced defective components with new parts and are selling it as a whole... oh well.

It's not that anyone is at fault, but more of an ethical thing.

Yeah, you can't really fault the seller.
