Why do people care about having analog surround I/O?

Hello,

I'm looking for a new receiver and read some reviews about some not having analog In/Outputs. Why would anyone care for these if they can just use HDMI over one cable? Does it have to do with DRM or hooking up with a HTPC? Thanks

It's because some people have older receivers that don't have HDMI, but do have analog multi-in.

Also, some people may have a spare component input, but not an HDMI input. *shrugs*

Also, dolby and dts 5.1 is lossy compression not lossless.

It's the same reason why music nuts like me rip to lossless FLAC files instead of lossy MP3.

Some people have older hardware that have 6 channel out. I have a DVD-Audio player that predates HDMI. The HDMI standard does include DVD-Audio transport now, but I am not even sure there is a player that has that feature seeing how DVD-Audio is dead.

denon, but i certainly won't be upgrading my player for a dead format just for a new connector.

If you have analogue in, you can perhaps still use the reciever as a power amp if a new standard comes out and you dont want to buy a whole new receiver, but just a prepro.

using different amps, using a stand alone dac, powered speakers. There are lots of reasons to have outputs like this.

Mainly it will be somewhat future proof for new surround sound formats. Also it's not always best to use the DACs in your receiver if you have other equipment that does it better. You can also use other external processors or equalizers.

My Pioneer elite dvd player has burr brown DACs that I prefer over the ones in my Marantz receiver, so I run analog from that to my receiver. I use this player ONLY for music because it plays S-ACD, DVD-Audio and regular CDs.
