Why do people call it mileage and not kilometerage?

Also, I cringe when ever I see people saying "car X gives a mileage of 15 KMPL." It just feels so wrong.

Can someone also explain the meaning of mileage to me?

Is it the number of miles a car has been driven? Or, the fuel economy of the car?

Ok, mile comes from the latin whatever (I seem to remember something like a thousand paces ). The Romans included mileposts on their (military) roads.
Kilometer entered into use in the Napoleonic Period as a reaction to "old" ways.
In the period WW1 to WW2 and some time after USA, British influence internationally in the Automotive and especially the Aviation Sectors dominated world usage.
Just as (I think) English is (was?) the international language of Aviation.
Worldwide news and magazine circulation.
Coverage of USA early EPA/mileage certainly contributes.
Language usage changes follow their own logic.

I always wondered that too. Really, we should just call it distance, or some other general term. Hopefully at some point the US will get with the times and start using the metric system like the rest of us, and we'll stop getting bad influences.
