Why do people buy portable dvd players instead of laptops?

I cant help but notice that the price of many of the portable dvd players is near $1000 U.S. money. For that price one could buy a laptop with a bigger screen and more features. What are some reasons to buy the portable dvd player? I am just curious. Also the ones that are around $400 have a really small screen. Thanks!

If I had the money, I would buy a portable DVD player because a) the wow factor b) it's compact and easy to carry around and c) I can bring it to any of my friends' places who don't have a dvd player, hook it up to their tv and watch movies.

Alfhead hit most of the major points. The device is compact, simple to operate, and you don't need to mess with booting up an OS or other programs.

I can bring my laptop to a friends place who doesn't have a TV and watch a DVD on a 15inch screen, or if he has a TV I can hook it up to his TV. I think gpl racer makes a good point.
